My passion for medicine began with an interest towards human sciences. It was after the results of my medical entrance examination, I chose to join a dental school. The first year of my freshmen year at the dental school was exciting. I had exercises on how to wax teeth, dissect cadavers, examine slides, and patient X-rays. I was pretty healthy and had no health issues. I also had exercises on how to make a perfect mix of the dental materials before using them on a patient’s tooth. Around the time I was exposed to those dental cements, the fine particles in the powder hit my face accidentally and my nose started to itch. My eyes started watering, head started to ache, and I was continuously sneezing. I could not complete my practical exercise.

The provider looked at my condition and said “Ms. Soma, this is just a common cold; you need not worry, your cold will subside in a week”. He gave me an anti-allergic medication for five days and sent us back home. I felt drowsy after taking the medication and went into a deep sleep. The next morning, my condition seemed better and I dressed up to the school. Everyday, I was exposed to the dental cements and dental plaster in the labs. I had no option to avoid it as the practice I do in my dental school will have a major impact on my career as a dentist. I always returned home with an itchy and running nose. It was difficult for me to focus on my exams, lab work, and daily activities. My condition worsened day by day; months went by. My friends hated to sit beside me as I was sneezing all the time. The medications prescribed by the doctor used to make me feel drowsy and sleepy all time. I was unable to concentrate in the classes. Professors complained my parents about the low grades and my absence to the labs. This alarmed my parents to take me to the same old primary care provider again.
