Dementia Praecox, which is a Latin based term meaning “out of one’s mind, before one’s time” is described to be a long lasting psychotic disorder (Psychology and Exploration, 476). Dementia Praecox was renamed by a Swiss Psychiatrist known as Eugen Bleuler. Eugen Bleuler had conjoined the terms (schizo-) meaning within the brain, and (phren) meaning among feelings, thoughts, and behavior, creating the term commonly known as Schizophrenia. However the disease was first discovered by Dr. Emile Kraepelin in 1877. Studies show that Schizophrenia can be traced back to old Pharaonic Egypt, even to times before Christ. Early theories even suggested that abnormality within a human being was caused by an evil possession. Symptoms start to show within the late teen years or early twenties. Schizophrenia is known among many different cultures. Common symptoms of Schizophrenia include delusions. Delusions are false beliefs about the world that a person holds to and tends to remain fixed on, even with evidence that proves the delusion untrue (Psychology and Exploration, 476). There are many different types of delusions a Schizophrenic can experience, such as delusion of persecution. In which a patient is facing delusion of persecution they believe that others are trying to harm them. Others face delusion of reference meaning books, or characters off of television or movies speak to them. Delusion of influence, believing that one is controlled by external forces such as aliens, and demons.
