However, he notes, “truly meeting the needs of low-income students would require fundamental reforms in financial aid.” He alludes to the early days of the Penn Grant, which in the beginning covered 84% of college expenses, making attending college for the poor a real possibility. Today, the Penn Grant covers half that, or only 42% of the costs of college. For many low-income families, sending their kids to college has become a financial impossibility. And that is exactly what I did. During the fall semester of 2016, at Pasadena City College, I was able to become a part of the Pathways program, join the Lancers for Life program, and was even able to secure a job position within Ralph’s. However, what I felt most accomplished about would be of all the classes that I have taken.…

The Absurd Policy Like many other colleges, Austin Community College has reasonable rules, policies, and procedures which students and faculty must abide by. However there is one policy I feel should be completely revised or discarded. ACC requires students who did not score high enough on the Mathematics and English sections of the SAT or TAKS test to either enroll in a remedial course or to take the TSI placement exam and test into a college-level course. The issue that concerns me is there are students who have credibility from their high school career, such as high GPAs and advanced course credits that proves they have the ability to learn and do well in college-level courses.…

Summer Transition Academy. Cited as a ‘best practice’ by Wheeler and Miao (2005), a summer transition academy for low achieving students may help to alleviate academic deficits. Similar to the Freshman Focus course, the summer program would provide opportunities for students’ academic remediation and support in study skills, reading, and/or mathematics (Cauley & Jovanovich, 2006; Neild, 2009; Wheeler & Miao, 2005). Cited by Neild (2009), Chicago Public Schools created such a program for students scoring “between the 35th and 49th percentiles in reading and mathematics on nationally normed standardized tests” (p. 70). They found that students enrolled in the summer enrichment had significantly higher rates of being on track for graduation (Neild,…

Although, there are advantages to DTCA, there’s some disadvantages you need to take into consideration such as benefits to the patient, providers, and drug companies. Providers often find themselves challenged with increased work and frustration when a patient questions their clinical authority based an advertisement.4 Physicians often oppose the idea of DTCA, finding it difficult and time-consuming to convince their patients that a medication is inappropriate for them. Sometimes, rather than argue with patient, the doctor’s will inappropriately prescribe a medication.
