As future social workers and substance abuse counselors, being culturally competence is a skill that we have to learn daily. All jobs require workers to be culturally competent. Being culturally competent does not just help us understand our clients, it also helps us learn new things. Through my internships and volunteering, I have been given the opportunity to be culturally competent. I have worked with children, adolescents, the homeless, and the elderly. Through those internships, I have been able to work with people from all different backgrounds. Those backgrounds include race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation.
