Cultural/Family Event
Faith Assembly of God Morning Service
On Sunday, March 13, 2016, I attended the first church service in morning. The service started at 9 in the morning at Faith Assembly of God. This event was publicized in the paper, on Facebook, and on their build board in front of the church. When I first arrived the lot was nearly empty. This is unusual because the second service you can never find parking. I was able to park close to the family center at the bottom of lot. This is where the children services are held in the building. After the children got out of the car, we walked to the building. Once in the building we had to take the elevator to the basement to their 2/3-year-old room. The children church

The audience that did have children in the service with them was babies with their mothers and a few toddlers and children. As I watched the African American children, the sat still and listen to the service and was very behaved. Then a baby fusing and the mother took the baby out until the African American baby settled down to join back into the listening of the service. Then I notice the Caucasian mother of a baby was crying and they try to settle her down, but didn’t work. It was a little hard to stay focus because you were concentration the crying baby. This make me think of how each of these parents was influences by the upbringings of their culture. I see that a lot of African American family lets the children know that this is church and you will be behaving and listen. When looking at the few families of this background, I notice they were all dressed up and notice the elderly women had on Sunday hats. This was different because this church was more laid back and casual dress was the majority of the church. I did notice that the majority of elderly dressed up in their Sunday best. The Pastor wore jeans and a blazer. This type of dress I believe is more comfortable to related to your …show more content…
I loved how the pastor and his family seem real and you can relate to them. One example I have is when my daughter went to church when she was in high school and I would tell her put the phone away. Then today at service, I see the pastor daughter on Facebook while her father is preaching and her mother beside her and she is on her phone as well during this time. She also has conversation with the other adults across the row and threw a piece of gum. I just had to laugh because it shows us they are human and not strictly on sit and be still for the service. Yes, I did sit by a couple that did make remarks about them on their phones and talking while her husband is speaking. I just believe this was considering disrespectful in their generation. This generation is different and it could be hard to adjust to in many ways. I believe that the social media is making a lot of changing in

    I. Description of a Ministry Situation A. Situation: The following case study describes a situation that took place at Grace United Methodist Church where I am appointed quarter time as licensed local pastor. The lay leader of the congregation contacted me by email asking for the approval of a five hundred dollar expenditure to help our building superintendent – who lives on-site – settle a financial debt that would lead to serious legal trouble if unpaid. Both men wanted me to sign off on the expenditure without the approval of the other church members. I preferred to include the church in this decision for institutional and theological reasons. B. The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

It was a celebration of the “Southern White strength and the power of the White”. On the Backstory podcast, it was said that the people of this celebration acted as if they, “didn’t know they had lost”. America should not stand for this view of white supremacy. It declares equality to all, no matter the race.…

For my project I decided to interview my mother’s Pastor. I chose to interview my mother’s pastor because even though I have attended services, I didn’t feel that the Pastor (s) are from my original tradition from when I grew up in Florida. Even though they practice the same religion I felt they were Catholic than Christian’s. To fulfill this project, I contacted my mother to see if she would feel comfortable me contacting her Pastor. After my mother agreed, I phoned her Pastor and asked for her permission to be interviewed.…

Many Indigenous people share the same beliefs, morals and values. They have a very strong belief systems within their religion from nature to sweat lodges and smudging, and the love for their land and their people are very clear. For example during the keynote speaker he talked about during their family gatherings and tradistions their children are not put at separate tables or told to sit away from the elders as many Non-Native American families do during holidays and special occactions. This impacted me in a way that was pretty profound. Still I am not sure how I can even express it in words what this statement did for me.…

“We are the misfits” was one of the last messages told by the pastor of the Evangelical Waterspring’s Chruch at 10:45 AM at 4250 25th East. After a long sermon of scripture, that was the leaving message before one final hymn performed by a very professional band. “We are the misfits” and their definition of a church as “people who shouldn’t be together but come together for the common goal of Jesus’s love.” I’d never particularly expected a saying like that to come out of a church or minister. In my experience, church and religious peoples were the norm, the majority, and sitting there surrounding by people swaying and singing and saying “amen” between pauses, I felt like I was the outsider.…

The first thing they told us was “ were having a talent show at eight, y'all should come” before any of us could answer their next comment was a prime example of how blacks try to drag race into everything. I have been working with children for over ten years and have had many life changing experiences with them. None of those experiences have impacted my life more then what happened to me a year ago. It all happened when a parent came up to me at the school I work at and asked me to be a buddy at a program called Buddy Break. I asked, what is involved, she told me that it involved me having an open mind, warm heart and a little bit of training. With a little bit of convincing I was on board and ready to embark on a new adventure that changed my life.…

Has racism really left the country since the amendments from the Civil War? Have people really changed enough to rid the United States, or other countries, of any form of racism, or have the cases of racism increased? Racism is “the belief that characteristics and abilities can be attributed to people simply on the basis of their race and that some racial groups are superior to others” (“Racism” 1). Although most people feel that racism has decreased over the years, it is clear that racism has not decreased, and may have even increased over time. Racism is seen everywhere: in stores, in restaurants, and even at sporting events.…

The Word of God The First EPC or Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Kent, WA gave me a primary insight to the Christian religion. Growing up Jewish I never had many opportunities to experience a different religion other than day to day exposure. However, my next door neighbors whom I have grown up with my entire life are devout Christians. Being uninterested in religion as it is I never questioned them about their religion or went to their church in the past.…

Pastor Scott graduated with a degree in theology and has been preaching for roughly twenty years. He speaks in a way that everyone from first-time-in church to lifelong church members can understand. Although his beliefs prevent him from agreeing with certain secular beliefs, he is always respectful of other people and their right to life how they choose. For the most part, I would say that everyone in the auditorium is there voluntarily. There are a variety of ages and ethnicities, and service is held in a medium sized auditorium with almost every seat filled.…

The previous chapters have been building and giving us terms to use for the different relationships in our life, including family. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 are about family, children, and relationships. What I enjoyed most about these chapters is being able to see how things changed and relate it back to my life. From chapter 8 there was a part about how the age when the average person has their first child went from 21 years old in 1970 to 25.4 years old today, 25 is when I want to get married and then start my family. Chapter 9 the chapter that I got the most from because it talked about different households and how children were raised.…
