Specific purpose: To inform the general public of the need and efficacy of compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Thesis statement: Any attempt to perform CPR is better then no attempt at CPR. I. Introduction Imagine this situation. You are at a family dinner. Everyone is enjoying conversation after the meal, and you notice uncle Leroy with a worried look on his face as he begins to stand up from his chair. Just as he stands he collapses to the ground. CPR stands for cardio pulmonary resuscitation, but simply put, CPR is manually pumping the heart and inflating lungs in order to supply oxygen to all the vital organs while the person is being resuscitated. It requires the person doing the resuscitation to activate the emergency medical System and then perform a complicated procedure a 30 chest compressions followed by to rescue breaths by mouth to mouth repeated continuously until help arrives. Medical professionals are taught CPR as part of our Basic life support certification. The problem is, CPR is actually a complicated process. Rotating between the chest compressions in the rescue breaths takes time. Compression only cardiopulmonary resuscitation eliminates the time lost in rotation. It also simplifies the process so that anyone can do it. To quote the American Heart Association directly, “in the studies of bystander CPR… hands only (compression only) CPR was better than no attempt CPR and produced survival equivalent to conventional CPR.” (Sayer) I think that speaks for itself. Anything is better than nothing, and if doing the best you can is all you can do, it may save a family members life. I ask everybody is listening today, take 90 seconds of your life, to save a life.
