The Importance Of Counseling The ELL Students

Improved Essays
I believe that counseling is such an underused and misunderstand field when it comes to students and adults. Counseling is a large field that with commitment, time and effort, I believe that most if not all problems can be worked out. With a counseling perspective on ELL students over all mental health, we can tackle the emotional side of learning a new language. ELL students are faced with a host of problems, for anxiety, discrimination, exploitation, rejection, depression, and many, many other issues. My big question is who is counseling the ELL students? As a school counselor I have to ensure that the students needs specially the needs of ELL students are being met. It is not only my job to help the students process their feelings it is my job to ensure that they are being properly taken care of, by the teachers, staff, students, and their parents.

My main goal is to ensure that I am meeting all the needs of my students. I want to make myself avabile to help get extra recoucrs, get tutoring, give counseling and even provide family support. I know that earing a new language is so very hard. I’ve personally struggled with learning Spanish for about 6 years. I how depressing it is not know something or to feel inadequate because I could catch on fast enough. I want to make sure that the students have a positive outlet to vent and process their feelings. Althout their maybe a langue barrier, I still want to allow them that time. I will take it upon my self to do what I can for the students. I think every students should get the best education possible. ELL students are not getting the best education possible if they are being shouved into one box that doesn’t allow them to express themselves or show their indivual personality. My main goal for my students is for them to come to me if they have a problem, and even if they don’t. I know that it is very cliché but the children are the future. If schools don’t nurture every student then we are continue the culture that some people are better then others. People who speak English are automatically superior to non-englsih speaking people. My next goal is for ELL students is to know that it is ok to make a mistake. Language acquation does not happen over night. It may take years and years for the child to fully be emarsed in the English langue to fully understand it. Next goal is for the students to encourage them branch out of their comfort zone and join school clubs and orgazations. It is important for the students to get a well rounded education.by joining these other school programs they will have a eider range to students other then ones in their class. They will use and gain other variations for English words and hopgully gain some new fridns and have fun. First I would start with my fellow admistaion staff for compliance and empathy for ELLs. I will meet with the ELL teachers and the teachers that are teaching the mainstreaming classes. I would ask the teachers to allow the students to come to my office if they see that there are having troubling days. The teachers will have to serve as my eyes and ears for they are constaly hands on with the studnets. I will also offer some sort of family time. This time will be used for the parents to tell me what they think their child needs

Students are so fragile and one bad experience can alter their thinking or change them forever. I really want to help the ELL students because I’m not seeing to many people that really care about them. ELL students have the same rights and responsibilities but yet they are treated like second-class citizens. I know that I won’t be physically teaching the students everyday, but I do believe that I will play a major role in their lives. Learning a new language is so difficult and they need all the support that is avablie. I would do my best to keep the parents involved. However, they may not speak full English also it is important have them help the students and in return the students will help them with

However, in my opinion, the security and comfort of a new ELL student is a great component to an ELL student’s successful second language acquisition as well as cultural transition. In the cases of Mawi, Questzal, and Rodriguez, they came from two separate countries, but they were all raised in a culture of fear, and this fear needs to be addressed in order to ensure success in a classroom setting. In short, a student must be made to feel comfortable in his/her environment and establish a variety of support systems to feel safe in school. Once this feeling of comfort and safety is reached, the student will be more motivated to become a part of community and work towards English language…
