I remember sitting in class and seeing the pain on Emmet Til's mothers face when she learned that the two men whom had killed her son were allowed to walk free after only an hour of deliberation. It was a period in American history where African Americans had to fight for their right to a better life. The cornerstone honors program provided me with rigorous courses that focused on open discussions and writings. My u.s history honors course consisted of writing essays and reading African American literature where I learned in great detail about the civil rights movement. This impacted me with a greater understanding about the history of our country and issues that gave African American citizens. It allowed me to see the evolution of a group …show more content…

For a human being, saying goodbye to your family, friends, culture and language is more than saying goodbye to your home, it is saying goodbye to your existence. Thinking to myself, I ask why someone would want to leave everything they have ever known to come to a place they know nothing. The answer I was looking for can be answered by looking into a mirror, the answer is me, but not only me, us. Our families endured the hardest step in achieving the American dream so that my generation could stand to benefit. With the hardest part completed before us, success is the standard all Hispanics are capable of. Successful moments such as seeing Barrack Obama, the first black president, appoint Sonya Sotomayor as Supreme Court justice. Like it says in our National anthem “Que el cielo un soldado en cada hijo te dio”, we must be willing to fight battles. I believe that my education has made me a solider that can proudly represent my heritage and care for my parents in their old age. Because to me being Hispanic means that I always have a purpose in life. It means that when I feel like the world is eating me alive, I cannot give up because my life is not only

Well, to put this into perspective being a Hispanic means dedication, toleration, and passion. Now you are probably asking yourself why have I carefully chosen these three words to truly describe what it means to be Hispanic in my mind. Well notably, these expressions contain a denotation comparable to no other because it can only be fully comprehended through the devoted lives of Latino’s all over the nation. As an illustration of how arduous our livelihood can be, imagine departing the country that birthed you do to the horrid adversities occurring in ones community to arrive in a new country without any help from society.…

In our modern society when someone intentionally leaves their home, state, or country it is typically for a good reason. An example of this might be a sports fan going to a Dodgers game to experience the thrill and joy of the game with fans alike, a nice vacation to the Bahamas with the added luxury of a first-class flight, and the possible enjoyment with being together with family which lives far-far-away only to be visited ever so rarely on special occasions. These all sound like brillant things to do because some people tend to give a superficial hate towards their own home, whether that is literally their home, town, or even state they all have something in common: they all point to the place we as humans call home. If someone had the…

In his poem “Running to America”, Luis Rodriguez writes that trying to achieve the American Dream requires many sacrifices. The beginning recounts an immigrant trying to cross over the border. “They are night shadows violating borders, fingers curled through chain-link fences, hiding from infra-red eyes, dodging 30-30 bullets.” The sacrifice starts before entering America. People sacrifice their lives, getting around guards and dodging weapons in the night, unable to see a thing.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I am now able to appreciate the traits that come from both of the cultures I live in, whether it be the opportunistic outlook on life that I have developed from living in the United States or the motivation that comes from living in a Mexican household. I have developed goals of success, such as attending a four year university and majoring in political science. My Mexican side has encouraged me to work as hard as I can to end the cycle of poverty that has plagued my family and be the first to go to college and obtain a degree. Since then I have grown to love the fact that I am Mexican-American even more and more. I love that I am bilingual, and I believe that this trait will help me obtain the career in law that I desire.…

Both of my parents made the ultimate sacrifice for my future; they left behind the only life they knew in a relentless search for prosperity. They arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs and the willingness to work, a privilege they were not granted in their home countries. My whole life I grew up with the value that hard work is good; if someone came to this country to work hard, there was no fault in that. My belief was shared in my community, which was more than half Latino, this notion was strongly ingrained in myself and my peers. In the past decade, the United States has seen a surge of Latino immigrants as a whole.…

Black Culture in Kent County Maryland: First Friday at Charles Sumner Post #25 Without the common draw of artifacts with eclectic stories or the experience of stepping back in time, Charles Sumner Post #25 may not seem like much to the avid history buff. However, it teaches an important lesson. To combat our own prejudice and ignorance we must participate in other cultures. By attending cultural events, we as people develop firsthand experiences that we may never have come in contact with if we were to stay within the confines of our own culture.…
