College to Career: A recent survey commissioned by Bentley University in 2014 found that “compared with business decision-makers and corporate recruiters, high school and college students were far less likely to define preparedness in terms of personal traits or work ethic” (Chase, 2015). This means skills and experience rank high for college students when they evaluate preparedness. Unfortunately, the same survey found “thirty-seven percent of recent college graduates give themselves a grade of “C” or lower on their individual level of preparedness” (Chase, 2015).…

The book “The Signal and the Noise” by Nate Silver, so far has emphasize the skill of using probability and statics which is a practical art of mathematical model building. I believe Silver takes a big-picture approach using statics, combining sources of data (ex. Baseball), sound statics and analysis, and historical data which is tested by many researchers and experts who have significant roles in the media. In the first six chapters, Silver covers the topics; the failure to predict the 2008 housing bubble in chapter 1, political predictions in chapter 2, baseball predictions in chapter 3, weather prediction in chapter 4, earthquake predictions in chapter 5, and communication of predictions in chapter 6. These six chapters take readers, including me on a journey of why so many predictions are not as accurate as we think and what can be done to fix the…

Variability in effectiveness and side effects of certain medical interventions among patients is well accepted. Indeed most doctors would agree that a “cookie-cutter approach” to medicine is not best practice and a more concrete approach that offers some predictability about which patients are more or less likely to benefit from an intervention is favored. Precision medicine offers such an approach. Briefly precision medicine involves factoring in individual variability in genes, environment and lifestyle into the decisions that guide the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease (1). The term data-driven instruction (DDI), also called data supported instruction, is a systematic approach that is used to improve student learning based on available data (Lewis, Madison-Harris, Muoneke, & Times, 2010). It is a cyclic and precise process that continually improves learner’s success. The cycle has three repetitive stages, namely, assessment, analysis, and action. The latter stages provide a school-wide support framework for improving students learning throughout the year by identifying gaps in their learning (Hamilton, Halverson, Jackson, Mandinach, Supovitz, Wayman, & Steele, 2009). Data or evidence is the most crucial component of this instruction approach.…
