Gun Violence
Did you know in 2016 alone, there has been at least 4,000 deaths due to gun violence? Gun violence has quickly become a very common topic on the news. Gun violence has also affected many innocent families and communities. However, many people have different views, which leads to controversy. For example, some people believe that anybody and everybody should be able to own a gun, others believe only certain people should own guns. Whether everybody should own a gun or only certain people, it is never okay to take anybodys life including your own. A school shooting is when a firearm has been discharged either in the school building or on the campus grounds. There can be multiple reasons why someone would open fire at a school. For instance, a school shooting like Sandy Hook would be where a person intends on killing multiple people with either a motive or no motive at all. A couple other popular types of school shootings are gang fights or someone who attempts or commits suicide. A school shooting is one of the worst types of shootings. For example, when going to school or sending your child to school, both the parent and the child should feel safe in the environment. Knowing that a child cannot go to school and feel completely safe is a problem. Democratic senator Chris Murphy stated, “Since Sandy Hook there has been a school shooting, on average, every week. How on earth can we live with ourselves if we do nothing?” (Washington Post 1). This quotation is very powerful because it really opens up the public's eye to what is really going on in our schools. Nobody ever realizes how many school shootings actually happen. Many school shootings are not put on the news because they happen so often. If awareness is raised about the harm that school shootings can do to not only the kids who get hurt or die, but the rest of the community surrounding the school, then it is possible to lower the number of school shootings that …show more content…
All the different types of shootings lead to many deaths each year throughout the United States. One of the scariest types of shootings is a school shooting due to how many it can affect in such a short amount of time. One shooting that can be prevented is accidental police shootings that did not need to happen. Thankfully, this year the numbers have started to go down, slowly, but there are many different things that have affected this. For instance, many policemen either have a dash or a body camera on them to ensure the police department has evidence of every call they go on. Another thing to help save lives during a school shooting is educating the students of what they need to do and the best escape route if possible. The next step the country should take to prevent shootings is to educate young children through workshops put on by the schools. With all this being said, gun violence could become less of a problem and possibly even save multiple people's
