One the on hand, reusing the parts of phone, on the other hand, reducing the use of toxic materials. The reusing means to dismantle some components of the obsoleted phone and install on another phone. For example, a battery could be designed to be used to similar products in different brands. Therefore, the idle batteries would be reused in new devices, instead of storing and throwing away. Therefore, the replaceable components improve the utilization of material and reduce the pollution caused by toxic material. Therefore, this approach is quite limited. Reusing components cannot solve the problem basically. Reducing the use of materials is to find other sustainable materials to replace the toxic materials. This approach is effective, however, it will take a long term to find an appropriate …show more content…
There have been companies use intelligent application management. When a user no longer interacts with an app, the app is send to where activity is throttled and the app may be suspended, called background state [7]. However, these way still waste power to keep the App running. As the result, the intelligent applications management could be designed to provide a choice for the users, which applications can be closed when the users do not interact with these applications for a certain long time. After that the devices could turn off some applications automatically following the user needs. Although the energy saved for each application is limited, the accumulation is unneglectable.

Conclusion
This essay has discussed two problems of the sustainability of personal computing, the toxic material in the obsoleted devices and the standby energy. The two solutions that have been mentioned to solve the first problem are not effective. But the development of intelligent application management could save the standby energy. The problems of the sustainability in this field is not only these two, if many other good designs are come up with, the personal computing would be much more sustainable and bring much

However, in the long run many of these companies don’t engage in safe recycling or trash disposal practices and are exposing people to toxic materials directly during the recycling process and indirectly as the materials seep into the ground and into the water supply. The receiving country’s people health and environment is further exposed when the materials are burned and smoke filled with carcinogens is released into the air. I am not sure if the amount of metals and spare parts is enough to offset the rising health care costs of people becoming sick in these areas. 2.…
