On the subject of raising children, there is an old saying which goes, “it takes a village to raise a child.” That being said, there is certainly truth to that in the modern classroom, in as much as students benefit from ample community involvement. Speaking from experience, there are many wonderful organizations out there that seek to help children. First and foremost, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program in Saint Lucie County is one organization I would keep a steady contact with. Similarly, for students who can stay after school, the Boys and Girls club of America offers a lot of opportunities for each student to get acquainted with their community members. In an effort to keep students and families connect with these great organizations, I would keep copies of their current event calendars in the classroom for interested students and parents. Likewise, if there were students and families that had particular sets of customs or cultural guidelines that needed particular and unique attention, I would be sure to keep informed. For example, during parent-teacher conferences or phone calls, taking notes about special accommodations. This would include religious holidays, forbidden foods, and off limit classroom topics.
