In the short essay “Other Voices, Other Rooms” by Gerald Graff, he discusses the different styles of teaching and why some work and some set students up for failure. As a college student, I agree with a lot of what he states and I understand his meanings completely. He points out that the way students are taught makes students struggle. Teachers will give students tons of information in each class and it is hard for them to distinguish what is what. They become confused and can’t focus on the big picture.…

INTASC Standards: 8, 9 Standard #8 - “The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (Henson, 2009).” As a teacher it is important to use a variety of assessments to evaluate and ensure that students understand and are learning the content presented in the classroom. In addition to giving traditional assessments such as a quiz, exam or paper, alternatives that will be provided include group assessments, self-assessment, portfolios, observations and performance assessments. By applying varied assessment methods a check for understanding of a student’s knowledge will be better assessed since there are limitations with different types of evaluations.…

In Cathy Davidson’s article, Project Classroom Makeover, one can easily see how biased and unrealistic the majority of her ideas and opinions are towards creating a new education paradigm. She has many valid points, but the amount of holes in her plans outweighs the benefits. What Davidson wants is an education to be interesting, while providing children with a successful start to life. While her intentions are possible, she is hoping for the wrong things to be changed in order for her scenario to work. Cathy Davidson strongly believes that standardization is inhibiting the ability for students to show their true potential outside of what is deemed important by the school.…

In Chapter 1 of Fulfilling the Promise of the Differentiated Classroom, Tomlinson suggests that the need for differentiation could be due to the student’s background knowledge, the pace at which they can learn, their cultural background, attitude and motivation to learn, their native language, and their learning style (p. 1-2). Tomlinson did not mention a child’s personal life. Experiences definitely impact how the child comes to class. Divorce, financial issues, peer conflicts, inner struggles, and other social-emotional issues play a huge part in how well a child will respond to the curriculum we place before them.…

The text from Turkle’s “Alone Together” focuses on the effectiveness of individuality and personalized learning against customization and collaborative learning. Davidson suggests that change and collaboration are effective in learning environments because it brings out a new atmosphere compared to the standardized and traditional ways of teaching.
