‘The Snake’ and ‘Just Lather and nothing else’ The barber in ‘Just Lather and Nothing Else’ and the Uncle in ‘The snake’ both face a challenging situation. However, the barbers decision is more ethical and thought out whereas the uncle's decision is more harsh and rushed. When the uncle is faced with a challenging decision, he took this decision hastily. While The Barber took his time and after thorough analysis and thinking about the problem he took his decision. As the uncle saw the boy killing the snake he is faced with the decision of what to do next, as he wants to teach the boy a lesson, “ I wanted to slap his face to swipe forever the insolence and brutal glee from his mouth and I decided then, very suddenly …show more content…
And I stopped suddenly and said ‘Oh, God,’ with the fierce smile of brutality frightening my face, and I thought ‘Oh God, Oh God’”. The uncle clearly shows regret in his decision as shown in the quote and the barber, on the other hand, had no regret and he felt that he has made the right decision. “But I don't want to be a murderer, no sir. You came to me for a shave. And I perform my work honorably. . . . I don't want blood on my hands. Just lather, that's all. You are an executioner and I am only a barber. Each person has his own place in the scheme of things”. This is important because it shows the different outcomes of each character's decision and how the uncle took his decision rashly and suffered negative consequences and the barber who took his time taking the decision, came to a more positive outcome, as the barber did not feel guilty in not killing Torres as he is very confident in his decision. Whereas the uncle regretted his decision. In conclusion both the uncle and the barber are faced with an important and challenging decision but the barber shows a better decision making skills as he took his time in making the decision and he faced positive

Hurston incorporates the snake in “Sweat” to recall of the famous biblical story of Adam and Eve where a man is controlled by a snake. Much like Adam, Sykes thought that the snake would somehow get him something that he wanted, but would eventually backfire. In the biblical story however, Eve is punished just like Adam. In “Sweat”, Sykes’s punishment is Delia’s…
