Marriage is a important component of the society structure. Even thought human beings are biologically similar, we have all kinds of different marriage forms based on culture and society they are in. In this paper, I will summarise two specific marriage form from Kung San society and Nyinba society. I will also talk about the advantage and shortcomings of the most common marriage form, monogamy, compared to those special ones. Finally, I will extend the topic the family and talk about the similar situation as for marriage.

The most familiar marriage and family to us is consists of one wife and one husband, called monogamy. This kind of marriage is spread in most western countries. There are reasons why most western countries choose monogamy as the legal default marriage form. One of basic advantages of monogamy is equality. Because the sex ratio of a society is almost equal to 1:1, monogamy is the best way to pair each individual with a partner. In the case of polygyny, one man will have several wives, which means some other men will have no wives at all. Only the strongest man can have reproduction success. In order to reproduce, other men need to fight to get wives, which will cause violence and the raise of death rate among men. The government definitely wouldn’t want to see this. Make the legal marriage monogamy will keep the society more stable. If we take a step back, the men who cannot have a wife is not equally treated in common sense. May be a good marriage in industry society, Monogamy does not fit the needs of all society. Take Nyinba society as a example. If they have monogamy in Nyinba society, they can hardly survive the severe climate there. Since the available planting area is very limited, the population must be in a certain range to make the whole society survive. Therefore, polyandry may be the best marriage form for them. Nyinba is a agriculture society, but not a typical one. A typical agriculture society will need a large amount of labor force to do field work, polygyny should be the best way to achieve this goal. Polygyny can maximum reproductive success of a few people. They are getting as much children as possible so that they get maximum future labor force. In an agriculture society, monogamy have disadvantages and is not the fittest marriage form. Even if the government make monogamy mandatory, there still will be people doing polygyny in private, because they get most benefit from it.
