Around thirty three percent of the people in Colombia are involved in agriculture in some way. Coffee is the largest legal agricultural export in the country. There are around 300,000 farms that exclusively grow coffee (World Book). "The second-largest coffee producer in the world, some 20 per cent of all cultivated land in Colombia is dedicated to growing mild Arabica beans, mostly for export. Although small scale, with an average farm size of just 1.2 ha, coffee production employs around a quarter of all agricultural labor and is a major source of income in many rural areas (New Agriculture)." Colombia also sells the second most cut flowers in the world only behind the Netherlands. This is a one billion dollar a year business for the country's farmers (New Agriculture). Most of the land in Colombia is held by rich land owners. They rent or lease small parts of this land to people that grow enough food for their families to survive on. Colombia is a very diverse country. Even though the country is very poor, the economy is improving because of recent industrialization. They still depend a lot on agriculture because it employs about a third of the country's population.
