College Group Observation Paper

The group that I observed was the high school to college group that provides support for students who are attending college in the fall and are experiencing anxiety during this transition. The group consisted of young adults from various socioeconomic backgrounds and are scheduled to attend various colleges all over the United States. Kerbie and Tali facilitated the group while Elaina, Caroline, Jasmine, Vanina, Pearl, and Emily were the participants. I chose to write about the group because the facilitators used successful tactics to provide a comfortable yet brave space for the participants, and I enjoyed watching it unveil during session. The group began by addressing and processing termination in the group since it was the second to last session for the members and facilitators. As the group continued, there was a guided vision activity towards future goals, a discussion of financial aid resources, and a …show more content…
In addition, the financial assistance resources that was given to the group, felt like it would have been more useful during the first few sessions. It is interesting to reflect why this group regressed to a beginning stage, when it was so close to terminating. I think this is a subconscious way that members react because they may not want to terminate or don’t feel ready to terminate. From the “here and now” perspective, the members were receptive towards the facilitators and looked like they were enjoying their time in the group. The members were very engaged and appeared comfortable with their peers and the facilitators. As an observer, you could tell that it was a positive group experience for the members, and could be attributed to why they don’t want the group to end. Whether the members were aware of it or not, this could be a contributing factor as to why the group regressed back to a beginning

One intervention that I would implement if I was the leader of this group would be to work with the students to identify referral services for any members that may need it. A lot of the members disclosed some heavy things about themselves and I think it would be important to refer them as necessary. Another intervention I would use would be to assist the students in dealing with any feelings they have about the termination of the group. The students kind of did this on their own, but I think that it would be beneficial to have had a leader there to help them further explore those feelings. Despite the fact that the students are sad to leave each other, it is clear that they have all grown significantly and have learned something about themselves through their Saturday…

When we fail to comply with certain standards, which are put in place by society we are often shunned from those who choose to comply with these values. After observing different social settings as well as the expected behavior in those settings I choose to focus my attention on ordering etiquette in fast food restaurants. In each of the fast food restaurants I observed in both the Hub and along downtown East College Avenue I noticed three elements of expected behavior. The first was to place an order to your cashier in first person. The second, consumers were expected to pay for their purchases.…

Continuing the research topic from last data collection assignment, I will further investigate on how people in real life actually memorize and remember their ancestors, and different family traditions and customs to sacrifice their ancestors by utilizing the participant observation and the observation research methods. I recalled the memories of my personal experience during last August when I was engaging in my grandmother’s worship, which applied to both the participant observation and the observation research methods. On the one hand, for the participant observation, I would like to share what my family members did during my grandmother’s worship. It was the first anniversary after the death of my grandmother, which was a significant day for all family…

The purpose of psychoeducational groups is to teach group members a new skill or provide them with previously unknown information that will be of benefit (Toseland & Rivas, 2012). They specifically work well for functioning individuals who have a lack of knowledge in a particular area (Corey & Corey, 2006). In this group, the purpose was to teach members new communication skills, help them learn how to better manage and express their emotions, and how to improve interpersonal relationships. Psychoeducational groups for adolescents are beneficial because the peer interaction that occurs in these groups lets members observe and try out new behaviours in a controlled, nonthreatening environment (Bore, Hendricks, & Womack, 2013; Sayder, 2008; Van…

Throughout this whole group work, I think the best approached that worked well with our group was assigning everyone their own parts of the assignment. I think this is a good approach because if someone does not get it done than we know who to blame that part on rather than everyone doing it together and you have no clue who did what. We have had no issues on people fighting over the parts they get. If they had an issue than they should show up to the meetings to address the issue rather than not going for whatever reason. The document is shared through google docs to everyone in our group so there is no reason to why no one is not able to get their part done.…

There were few other teachers around eating their lunch, grading paperwork and making copies. She directed me to a table near the back where it was much quieter.…

As a facilitator using personal stories allowed for my group members to get to know me and the way that I think, as well as provided a safe environment to share their personal stories as well. This ultimately allowed for us to get to know one another and build our group dynamics, whilst simultaneously critically reflecting and learning about the course material. All of the facilitation questions that I asked received fulfilling answers, as my peers answered the questions from a social work perspective, as well as using their own experiences with group facilitation. The group dynamics were incredibly interesting to me as the first facilitator, our similarities as well as…
