Minecraft is an invaluable tool in my education; it has given me a productive means of creative output, a way to refine my artistic abilities, and allowed me to practice critical thinking and analysis in an engaging manner. Because it has helped me develop these skills to such a profound degree, I strongly believe it can be used to help others as well.

There is no direction as to how you should play the game, and so each individual may focus on a different aspect or skill. Minecraft has allowed me to build anything that I wanted, and create things that are truly beautiful. It has taught me to plan weeks in advance for complex builds, create pieces in series, and experiment with different techniques. For example, my specialisation in construction were Ships of the Line, and as time progressed, my creativity expanded. I began with building giant monstrosities of wood (1), and through constant refinement of my ability, progressed to ships that contained large amounts of

A website named Business insider stated that, “Traditional video games are more complex and harder to master, and they require that the player learn a wider and more challenging range of skills and abilities.” This quote ,by McGonigal in her Book “Superbetter”, helped her explain why modern games should be played to help build skills. Skill building provides knowledge training, and exposure to new opportunities and skill development. An example of this is playing a single player first person shooter game, and learning what to do in order to go on with the game or the story. Video games build skills by requiring the player to use skills and knowledge gained from earlier challenges to complete later ones.…

In 2016, the games industry has managed to become worth billions of dollars, the games themselves have become more mature and have appealed to wider audiences and communities of millions of people have formed around specific games. My personal experience with gaming comes from my time playing World of Warcraft, a massively multiplayer online role playing game where anyone can create a character and work alongside others to achieve goals like killing certain monsters. What makes World of Warcraft unique is that rather than playing through a story on your own, a large part of the game includes interaction…

Just like every other kid on the block , I was glued onto some sort of LCD screen since the age of 8. It was until I entered my first year of high school that I truly understood the beauty of video gaming. Video games are helpful with enhancing cognitive skills and they actively teach problem-solving and creative ways of thinking that can be used in everyday life. They are motivating and goal-oriented, and they can be designed in so many different ways and be geared toward all different kinds of subjects and materials. If a video game is complex and difficult and requires so much time and effort to beat it, why do children still play them? Because they enjoy playing and being challenged, and because they are driven by the goal of beating the game, which makes all their time and effort worth it. The education system needs to look at how they can incorporate educational video games into schools to help encourage children to learn. The rest of the world is all about technology, and it is time for schools and learning environments to get up to speed so that students can learn in the same ways they experience life outside of a classroom; surrounded by technology and…

In the wake of this influx, educators face growing challenges as they teach a very “wired” and soon a very “wireless” generation of students using technology that is evolving every day. Deconstruct the fun in any good game, and it becomes clear that what makes it enjoyable is the built-in learning process. To progress in a game is to learn; when students are actively engaged with a game, the mind is experiencing the pleasure of grappling with and understanding new systems. This is true whether the game is considered “entertainment” or “serious” for example, an FAA-approved flight simulator. The implications of delivering game experiences for education and training are enormous and this is shown by, The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) which estimates 298 million games were sold in 2008.…
