As I walked into Quicken Loans Arena as a star-crossed child, my heart was pounding as I looked up to the jumbotron to Mr. Jones. At that moment, my heart lept out of my chest as he pointed towards me, beckoning my eagerself to the court. The instant I stepped onto the arena floor, I knew basketball was what I loved. Once back from the show, I began playing basketball every day in the driveway. My father, a basketball legend in high school, would come back from work and hear my nagging voice pleading with him to shoot hoops with me. This became a ritual for us and soon something I looked forward to everyday until the start of basketball season in seventh grade.
I was excited for this season because I could finally try out for the school team. Although it would be weird to no longer play four-on-four with my goofy, gap-toothed buddies, I was determined to make the team and represent my school. As I was called in I saw a few kids celebrating their positions on the team. I wanted to join them so desperately in celebration that I almost forgot that the coach was waiting for me in the doorway to his musty office. Eighty degrees’ summer days always seem hotter inside that building. Sodium from my sweat stinging my eyes, and that aged industry fan struggling to perform to perfection as I do. The only sounds radiating from the nearly empty gym court were the dribbling of a ball against the hard wooden floor and the occasional swish or clank of the hoop. Sweat drenched my red shirt, staining it a dark shade of maroon, and the shoelaces of my Nike Air Jordans were becoming undone, but I barely noticed as I continued to practice that Kyrie Irving move I saw during the 2013 All-Star Rookie-Sophomore game: cross between the legs, behind the back, in and out, cross left, step back, and shoot. Nothing but net. A quick thought crossed my mind.…
