Aspects of Motivation That Support Leadership Skills
Motivation is the key to good leadership. After all, motivation is the ability to change the behavior of people by inspiring them to adhere to a common identity, ensuring team collaboration, and achieving organizational objectives (Ugoani, 2015). Northouse (2016) discusses three aspects of motivation to prepare people to become leaders. First, they possess the willingness to lead and tackle complex problems. Second, they need to express dominance in order to establish influence. Third, they must commit to the social good of the organization.
Coach Nick Saban exemplifies the characteristics of a motivational leader. He embodies the three aspects of leadership (Northouse) described. Coach Saban has tackled many complex problems during his career as a head coach at the University of Alabama, he displays dominance in his position, and he definitely commits to the social good of the university. Coach Saban believes motivation provides the inspiration young adults need for success. As a matter of fact, he frequently has motivational speakers come and talk to his players and coaches. The path-goal theory focuses on getting followers to accomplish goals by emulating the preferred style of leadership followers need to perform at higher levels of efficiency and the transformational theory of leadership focuses on motivating followers to agree to change operational tradition in favor of a new and better method of doing business (Northouse).
