Circumference Of Football Player's Gastrocnemius

Improved Essays
Research Question:
Is there a relationship between the circumference (cm) of football player’s gastrocnemius (tensed, preferred foot) and how far they can kick a football (m)?

Background Information:
The investigation of the distance at which a football player can kick a football can be done in many ways. The first way would be to literally measure out the distance of how far the player kicks using a trundle wheel or a measuring tape. However, a far more practical way of doing this experiment is by using a speed gun to calculate how fast the ball is travelling, and record the time it takes for the ball to land onto the ground. Using a speed gun, one can calculate the speed at which an object is travelling and use that information in n equation to find the

Controlled Variables
What is the variable? How will it be controlled?
Age All participants will be in the age range of 16-18 years old
Clothing/Apparel All participants must wear football clothing (shirt, pants, shoes)
Rest between trials The rest in between trials is fixed to 30 seconds, this is because the player might begin to feel tired after a few trials, and an ample rest period is optimum in order to create a fair and reliable test.
Weight of the football The weight of the ball is fixed to 430 grams, as per FIFA regulations
Equipment All equipment is the same, speed gun, stopwatch and the brand of the football.
Experimenter There will be 3 different experimenters, each recording the time and measuring the size of the player’s calf.
Preferred Foot The participant must use the same foot to kick the ball to create a fair and reliable test.

As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by.…

The experiment consists of two parts. First, we need to randomly select children from low income families and randomly assign them into two groups: A and B, recording their fitness like BMI data. Second, we have to manipulate one and the only one independent variable which is the presence versus the absence of exercise and measure the dependent variable which is the children’s BMI data. To be specific, we keep one group of children do exercise every day and another group be more sedentary as well as control all other conditions or variables equal. Also, to avoid the experimenter expectancy effect and the placebo effect, we should let other researchers assign the groups without knowing which one is the experimental group or control group by ourselves.…

An outfield player would use training methods such as interval and continuous. Interval training helps with creating an aerobic base during the preseason; interval training exercises such as the beep test help mimic the typical game of soccer as it shows the constant stop and start nature of the sport. As the competitive phase of the season approaches, ball work can be introduced. Continuous training helps with building on top of the aerobic base that the player had formed with the interval training. This helps prepare the player for a full ninety minute game of soccer.…

With these measurement techniques there is a risk for interrater error. To reduce the risk, these measurements will be taken twice by two different members of the research team. If the two measurements are not the same, but they are relatively similar, the average will be calculated and accepted as the measurement used for the research study. Should the two measurements not be similar, the primary investigator will conduct the third measurement, which will be used instead of the two previous…

There have been several researchers studying the effects of caffeine, and they believe it can enhance athletic performance and agility in sports. Because of this we believe if caffeine levels are increased, then time taken to run a lap will decrease when time is a function of caffeine level. To test this we will have a group of ten subject male and female who around the same athletic capabilities. Then, we will give them a set volume of liquid at different caffeine levels to see if the subjects running time changes with the caffeine.…
