Based on the idea of being a first-generation college student, I have more experience with the tensions that come along with transitioning to college. Most of which, are cultural shocks. To start off, cultural shocks would be things that involve how easily one can adapt to a new environment. Even with help from advisors, professors, and fellow students, it is all a big step towards possibly redefining the way one will see different ideas. One culture shock that I have experienced is the lack of being able to redirect the way I am used to doing things.…

Since the day I first moved to Madison more than three years ago, I realized that the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a large presence in the community. Everywhere I go, I see the school emblem of the University and the familiar cardinal and white colors. Despite growing up and having a fondness for my old state, California, UW-Madison has captured my attention as a community which I long to be a part of. With the welcoming atmosphere and the ability to discuss current issues anywhere on campus, I can easily fit into the community. As an Asian-American, as an LGBTQ+ individual, as a driven and motivated student, UW-Madison seems to be the logical choice.…

When my parents told me that I will be attending my remaining years of high school in the United States, I was overjoyed. It was a dream I had ever since I saw the towering buildings of New York on my dad's work-trip magazines. I admired the work my parents put in for several years to make my dream happen and I was happy to have my brother beside me along this adventurous ride. When I arrived in Mississippi, I struggled for a few months to adapt to the separation from my parents, friends, and even the cold tap water I used to drink at home. The southern accent of my teachers and dorm parents was tough to discern using my Hollywood movie inspired English.…

First-generation college students, defined as those students whose parents have no more than a high school education (Pascarella et al., 2004), tend to have lower graduation rates than their non-first generation peers (Stebleton & Soria, ) and are twice as likely to leave 4-year institutions before the second year (Bringle, Hatcher, & Muthiah, 2010). In fact, almost half (43%) of first-generation students entering college leave before completing their degree as compared to 20% of other students (Chen & Carroll, 2005). Even when first-generation college students persist beyond 3 years, they are less likely to earn bachelor’s degrees than their peers (Pascarella et al., 2004) and less likely to enroll in graduate degree programs (Hahs-Vaughn, 2004). Additionally, Vaughan, Parra, & Lalonde (2014) found first-generation students often come from low-income families and ethnically diverse backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education, for which the statistics on retention and graduation are even worse: only 11% finish a…
