Violence in America: What Is the Cause of it?
Violence is not a new trend in the today’s world; it has been around for years. Violence has many causes including exposure to violent media, violence in the home or neighborhood or frustration. However, violence has a major effect on the younger generations. It appears that violence has an effect on all age groups in today’s society. Not a day goes by that violence is not mentioned on the news. When individuals think of violence, often crimes such as murder and robbery come in mind. However, there are many other types of violence that are not common. Cyber bullying and violence of the media are rarely talked about, but they have just as much power as crimes. The media violence is persuasive, and many youths are exposed to a lot of it. Media violence consists of video games, books, television, internet and the radio. Unfortunately, violence is literally everywhere in the media. Children can become overly involved and even obsessed with video games. Video games are a unique form of entertainment that many kids have become attached to. It has become a popular activity for people of all ages especially kids. People spend numerous of hours throughout the day playing video games. In the older days, kids did not have the chance to sit down and play video games as the kids of this generation do. They spent most of their times outdoors cleaning up or either helping their parents. However, many video games have been labeled as being violent and dangerous. Many video games in today’s’ time consist of shooting, robbing, killing, guns, knives, and also bombs. Video games and TV programs can both be violent; however, video games play a huge role because the person is actually involved with the violence (Bushman). Youths that is exposed to violence immune to it. They imitate the violence they see, and show more aggressive behavior. For example, many kids watch Spiderman; however, most of them want to be just like him (Beresin). They love how he saves the world through fighting and killing other people. Most parents have no problem with their kids wanting to be just like Spiderman. Little do they know there is a huge affect on many youths. Children who play violent video games or watch violent films are most likely to have a violent mindset. It causes kids to want to fight, stab, or shoot other kids, or even animals. Players of violent video games are more likely to identify with a violent character (Bushman). Many youths engage in violent acts such as fighting, bullying, killing, and robbing (“Do Video…”).
