Angel Cinetros: Latino Identity and Political Attitudes The second presentation on ethnic identity was very interesting. It was stated that Latinos possess many Republican traits. They are socially conservative, middle of the road, and ideologically religious. The presentation went on describing how race and ethnicity are the same thing but tend to only matter politically, like on the census.…
The overall rhetorical situation discussed in the special event "Question Bridge: Black Males" was the problems associated in the young black male communities and how certain scenarios are not that different, racial wise. This does sound broad, but it does fit the topic appropriately since the volunteers associated with the documentary touched on a lot of topics pertaining to young black male communities like finding that special someone, discussing how drugs and smoking is viewed as, generations begin to differ in appeals, etc. One of the questions brought up in the documentary was "In this era, in this society, do you consider yourself to be free as a human being?" A very interesting question since there will be many appeals towards it;…
I also really liked the analogy she made with the violence in American school systems. Just because certain school have had violence that is memorable, doesn’t make all the schools in American the…
The topic of the discussion/ lecture was about gentrification in Pilsen, a lower West Side community area on the West Side of Chicago. In the discussion I learned that gentrification is the process of renovating a district or community so that it conforms to middle class state. It was commented how property values have increased, rents have increased, and the number of low income Latino families has decreased. Pilsen is losing Hispanics, particularly Hispanic families because rents are so high. People, specifically caucasion, are buying properties in the Pilsen area and remodeling them.…
The event I decided to attend was the presentation “Dreamers after DACA” by Maria Belen Sisa. The main reason I decided to attend this presentation was mainly due to the fact that the DACA situation is something I am actively involved in and hearing stories of individuals under this program gives me insight as to what is currently happening to them after the program was ended. Sisa also discussed ways to get involved and take action to demand a clean Dream Act which was another factor as to why I attended. This event relates to the course’s theme because it discussed the issue of ethnicity and ethnic groups in education and employment.…
Summer Slininger Latino: The Changing Face of America is a documentary that dives deep into the fact that in the future the United States will face a demographic shift and Latinos will become the largest demographic group. Roxane Frias created this documentary to inform people about how the Latino population will begin to have a large influence on the United Sates future within politics and communities. This movie was an eye opener for me, as before watching this film I was oblivious to many of the facts that were spread throughout the film. When the film began to talk about how the presidential candidates need to receive the Latino vote in order to win presidency, I was a little weary on that fact.…
I attended the Time Wise lecture on Tuesday, October 11th where Tim Wise spoke about racism and discrimination in America. Tim was a very uplifting speaker who talked about very raw subjects that many of us simply avoid. He spoke about racism, and how it is in-fact not a thing of the past. He talked about LGBTQ groups and other groups we look at as minorities. Tim talked about everything we talk about in Women’s studies but just to a heightened degree.…
Friday and Wednesday’s gallery walk was a huge learning experience. I learned so much about topics that I didn’t know anything about like Kent State, The Space Race and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. When I was presenting I loved seeing how interested people were in my topic as was I. People had so many questions and it was great to be able to know so much and answer them. My topic was the John F. Kennedy assassination.…
Mark Emmert alongside a female Indiana Law Professor talked to a small group of students, teachers, coaches, and adults. The conversation started with a few basic questions. The first being, “How are rules made and what is the process?” Emmert went on to talk about self-governance and how the universities themselves make their own rules and make their own decision on finances. The NCAA however, is broken down into 3 divisions and a collection of university presidents with sub-committees that make decisions on tournaments and revenue.…
On November 7 I was a speaker at the NC Promise Tuition Symposium held at the University Center. I helped setup the Symposium by arriving at five pm and passed out flyers to students entering and leaving the University Center. After the flyers were passed out the event began with Alexandra Cole who was the introducer. Senator Cole explained what the NC Promise Tuition Plan contained and gave the procedures on how students can get a question answered either at the event or online. After Senator Cole introduced the event she then introduced Haley Gardener who was the speaker of the major effects of the Tuition plan at the academic and financial level.…
Hi Haim, Your event sounds very interesting. I like how they included women from various backgrounds to raise awareness of social and media inequalities. I think it was great that they were trying to bring issues of race, gender, class and social justice into the public eye and raise awareness of these issues within our society. Since each of these women came from different environments can you tell me what were some of the individual hardships that they faced and what they would like to be changed? And what were some of the injustices that they all had in common with each other?…
The content material that stood out to me most this week of that of the Ted Talk of the experiences of Japanese Americans during the war and also the experiences of Native Americans. I think this is extremely beneficial to my learning process as I frequently consider the perspectives of the African American and Latino population, but rarely are the experiences of Asian Americans and Native Americans at the forefront of my mind. In addition, the Classroom Divided was also impactful as I have also seen videos with Jane in the past and her work is greatly depicts the oppression and discrimination experiences by minority groups. The usage of the blue eyed vs brown eyed people experiment is extremely powerful and a great representation of what…
I am Stephanie Moscoso and as a writer I tend to summarize too much, sometimes a little too much. In my paper Two Kinds I summarized so much that even my quotes would summarize what I just said. Throughout my journey as a writer I have gotten the chance to see that I love writing, but sometimes it could be difficult for me to express my self, so I ramble on. This semester one of the most difficult essays that I had to do was about the story “Two Kinds”. Usually I am really good in brainstorming, but this specific essay was not as easy for me because we had to look at it through a critical lens and analyze the story well.…
Erin Gruwell enters Long Beach school district, which is close to Los Angeles and gets a taste of her students lifestyle. She is a white teacher entering a black, Latino, and Asian community. Although she is not intimidated by them, they seem…
It was a great opportunity to visit the Kankakee country juvenile courtroom and get a better insight about the child welfare system and what the speakers had shared. I really liked how they explained about the process of juvenile court cases and the many different roles that are involved in a child’s case. Last year, I had the opportunity to go to a domestic violence court for my Crisis Intervention class, so it was great getting the opportunity to go back to the court house again. Especially, hearing the many different roles that are involved in a child’s case and getting a better understand of their perspective and their experience in their field. For example, the speakers that are involved in juvenile courtroom that spoke on Wednesday was…
