Every year one thousand nine hundred and sixty kids from ages zero to nineteen die from cancer each year. Hazel Lancaster thought she was of the unlucky few after she was diagnosed with Stage Four Thyroid Cancer. Waiting for time to clock her out was all she ever looked forward to. Until a mysterious boy came into her life through support group meetings Hazel was waiting to implode. In John Green novel The Fault In Our Stars, Hazel Lancaster rebels against her society’s unfair limitation towards cancer patients by acting unusual for someone who has recurring terminal cancer, pursuing a dream that can cause a recursion of life-threatening events, and by falling in love unknowingly.

The downside of having of Hazel having cancer is that not everything is safe. Upset by not being able to go Hazel drafts an unsent email to Peter Van Houten wanting to inform him by saying “I couldn’t come to Amsterdam but I swore upon the life of my mother that I would never share any information. (Chapter Eight: Page 120).” But with the help of Augustus Waters both parties set on an adventure to find their mystery man because “why not? [...] it’s your life. (Chapter Eight: Page 117).” In the process of figuring a way to get to Amsterdam, the living area of Peter Van Houten, Hazel’s puts an encroachment to her health. Not wanting to look like the girl doctors, parents and friends call helpless, Hazel pleaded to be able to be normal for once. Taking the risk of flying twenty-thousand feet in the air just after relapse isn't the best choice, but when death could come any minute why not take the chance. Arriving in Amsterdam to fulfill her dream of meeting her favorite author she soon realized that what she wanted out of him was almost impossible to find.When Peter said “I regret that I cannot indulge your childish whims, but I refuse to pity you in the manner to which you are well accustomed (Chapter 12: Page 192),” to Hazel, her whole view about him was altered. “He was long leanly muscular, [...] Mahogany hair, straight and short (Hazel, Chapter One: Page Eight),” this was Hazel’s first ever notice towards one peculiar boy named Augustus Waters saying. Hazel’s attraction towards Augustus was almost instantaneous and foreshadowed only temporary happiness. It’s very common for people to fall in love, even if they have cancer or not, but unlike many others, Hazel accidentally fall in love with someone not guaranteed to live the life they truly deserve. Hazel knew what she got herself into and from it came Augustus unlike himself questioned himself projecting the thought of “What am I at war with? My Cancer. And what is my Cancer? My cancer is me. [...] it is a civil war, Hazel Grace, with a predetermined winner (Augustus, Chapter 13: Page 216).” This was the destination Hazel knew would come from cancer but it wasn’t on the person she thought it would affect. Even after Augustus’ death, Hazel still was determined to be the only thing she could be, which was herself. Hazel knew that falling in love would be hard when it came time to say goodbye but in the end, nothing could change in her favor.
