To combat the talents expressed in this story many people are equipped with “handicaps,” objects to lessen them to a “normal” level. They attack intelligence, strength, and other talents. These handicaps are supposed to make all the humans in this story equal, but the underlying meaning is that no one in this universe…

All of this is achieved in the short science fiction, “Harrison Bergeron,” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The story is about a 14 year old boy named Harrison Bergeron who is beyond “normal” and how everyone who ever ‘above average’ have to wear handicaps. The constitution states that all men are created equal, and that there are certain rights that cannot be taken away such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also, if there was anything or any law standing in the way of a person’s life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness we the people have the right to abolish such things. Well in Harrison Bergeron all men were not created equal to a certain extent, but they were made equal. In the year 2081 all men, women, and children were equal in every way, shape, form, and fashion. They did not bring the ones that were intellectually disabled up or help them become sharp-witted.…

The ideas surrounding utopias and dystopias are popular today, since people want to be treated equal and have equality, so authors are getting more curious about utopian as well as dystopian societies nevertheless the idea behind those societies are to have flawless government systems and total equality. Some evidence that supports this claim are the equal rights riots happening in present day, as well as the examples displayed in the story “Harrison Bergeron.” Consequently, all of the riots that have been happening in today's world, such as the Virgina riots which have been happening because people want equality. The people with a higher participating level have to wear a handicapped machine to make the others with fewer advantages equal. It makes sense that it is making them equal but it is still not fair. According to Anthem “ Indeed you are happy, how else can men be when they live for their brothers?” (Rand, 45). Equality was asked this by one of the Home Councils, they expected them to be happy because they lived for their brothers which meant that everything they did or said whether it was wrong or right it counted for them or against them and their brothers.…
People have different opinions on whether everyone was or was not truly equal in Harrison Bergeron. Harrison Bergeron is a short story about everyone becoming equal in the year 2081. In 2081, society is made “equal” by putting handicaps on the more talented people, and making them have consequences if they take the handicaps off. The author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s use of hyperboles, symbolism, and similes develop the theme that forcing people into equality could be abortive. Essentially, hyperboles help develop the theme in Harrison Bergeron for several reasons. In the text it states “Ordinarily, there was a certain symmetry, a military neatness to the handicaps issued to strong people, but Harrison looked like a walking junkyard. ”This quote helps support the reoccurring theme of bad equality because Harrison looks very atrocious in his handicaps, while most don’t look that lousy. When you try to make everyone equal, of all sizes and shapes, you are certain to mess up on some part.…
In this society, people are finally equal among each other and the Agents of the United States Handicapper General govern to enforce equality. To keep this equality, George, who has an above average intelligence, is legally required to wear a mental handicap radio in order to lower his range of intelligence to be like everyone else. While Hazel, on the other hand, has a perfectly average intelligence which means that she cannot think about anything except in short quick bursts. Hazel and George’s handicaps interfere with their emotions and logical thinking, which causes them to be completely oblivious when “HG men took [their] fourteen-year-old son, Harrison, ...but [they] could [not] think hard about it” (Vonnegut 1). The dystopian societal pressures have caused Hazel and George to be less sympathetic about their son’s well-being.…

Equal opportunities in employment and education have been a big part of their efforts too. For many years, children with disabilities were many times segregated and not given an equal opportunity for a chance to learn and succeed in school. A disability should not limit a person’s choice to improve themselves and their intellectual capabilities.…
