Cameroon
Cameroon is a country located in the west of Africa. It shared boundaries with Nigeria, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Central Africa Republic, and Gabon. Cameroon is made up of ten regions with the capital city known as Yaounde. Its population is estimated to be around twenty million. Climate in this country varies according to terrain, tropical climate is witnessed along the coast and semiarid and hot in the north (kwintessential, 2016).
As a diverse society, Cameroon is made up of more than 250 ethnic groups with most of these group having its own dialect. This is as a heritage from France and Britain as her colonial master. Although French and English are the official languages, most Cameroonians are clinged to pidgin English as this broken English is widely spoken across the country. The government of Cameroon has been promoting bilingualism, but until today, only a small percentage of the population can speak and write both French and English fluently.
The population of Cameroon actively participate in religion. Around 40% of the population practice Christianity, with all christian faith actively represented. Around 40% of the population practice the indigenous religion, and about 20% practicing the Muslim religion.
Families are usually big in Cameroon, with the practice of extended family such as uncle, aunt, cousin, second cousin, grandfather, grandmother, etc widely practice across the country. For example, when visiting a home, it is expected to carry a present such as fruit, wine, etc to the host. One should be careful not to take alcohol to a Muslim family.
When visiting a Cameroonian home, it is expected that you dress properly, which is a sign of respect. While at the home, the visitor should end up only in the livingroom as other rooms are considered private and are not opened for visitors. At the table, proper table manner is expected, and if you are not sure, you can just follow the behavior of others.
In business settings,adequate formality is expected. For instance, when addressing someone, the use of tittle is strongly advisable. Presentation of business card should be done using both hands or only the right hand. After receiving a business card, spending few seconds or minutes to glance through shows respect and seriousness. Business meetings are not as private as one may think. Interruption can always be witnessed during meetings and this should be discouraging. After reading the country profile and cultural profile for Cameroon, I found that what is stated there is clearly in line with what one will find in Cameroon.
