King Leopold II was born April 9, 1835 in Brussels, Belgium. He established Belgium as an imperial power, he led the first European effort to develop the Congo River basin. He took control of Congo from 1885-1908 and establishing the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Congos name was later changed to Belgian Congo after King Leopold II lost power over Congo.Congo was considered “owned” by King Leopold II. Some of his tactics were to take females and kids from their tribe and force the men to collect rubber for the Belgians to take back and sell .
