Polymeric nanoparticle to treat Breast Cancer: Abraxane, Albumin-based nanoparticle loaded with Paclitaxel.
Introduction
Cancer in general is when abnormal cells start growing out of control. These abnormal cells have gone through a mutation in the genome and have lost their ability of growth checkpoint.
This means the cells had changes in their DNA and instead of repairing the damage or dying, it continues to divide thus leading to cancer because of faulty cells. The damage to the cell is either brought on by genetics (passed on through parents), aging, or the environment (such as sun exposure, chemicals, etc). The process of cancer cells going into the bloodstream or lymph vessels and affecting new parts of the body (growing …show more content…
Cancer is named after the place it originally started for example breast cancer that has metastasized is called metastatic breast cancer. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that begins in the breast cells2.
This specific type of cancer can happen in both women and men. In women, most breast cancers start in the ducts lining, lobules lining, and a very low number in other tissues in the breast. In men, this type of cancer mainly starts in the ducts. Breast cancer in males is not so common because the breasts are less developed and because they have lower levels of female hormones (affect growth of breast cells)3. In both men and women, cancer can spread through the lymph vessels (clear fluid carried away from breast), as mentioned earlier, because it connects to other parts of the body such as under the arm, inside the chest, and above or below collarbone and grow in the lymph nodes (small bean-shaped, collection of immune system cells)2. Polymers can be either synthetically made or naturally occurring, it is a large molecule made up of simple repeated units4. Albumin is a natural occurring polymer5 that is mainly present in …show more content…
In advanced pancreatic cancer, it is the first medicine to be used along with gemcitabine14 because it is the hardest to treat and the deathly rate it poses.
Conclusion
As nanotechnology advances, nanoparticles should be used to treat cancer because of the numerous advantages it can consist of. These advantages include the specificity of the cancer cells (the target) because of the receptors that tumors express in a large quantities, and fewer side effects from strong medicines that kill cancer cells, Currently, chemotherapy targets not just cancer cells but also, healthy cells anywhere in the body because the medicine is not specific to those cells. This can cause many unappealing side effects as discussed earlier and even death in serious cases. In order to prevent this, nanoparticles should be used just to target those unhealthy cells in the body. So far, first generation of nanoparticles just carry one drug and are specific to tumors but some can encounter problems along the way such as the immune system or being filtered out. Second generation nanoparticles are better than first generation nanoparticles as they can carry more than one chemotherapy drug inside and evade
