A man named Mitsuyo Maeda started training in Classical Jiu Jitsu and Judo through the Fusen Ryu. In 1906 Maeda was sent to the US to spread Judo, which was mainly techniques of throwing your opponent. The man was undefeated throughout his entire life, believing to have been in over a thousand fights, although Jiu Jitsu was originally formed for self defense. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a modification of Judo and was started by Carlos and Helio Gracie. Carlos was trained by Mitsuyo Maeda, and was a magnificent fighter. His brother Helio, on the other hand, was diagnosed with a condition that made him tire out very quickly. So quick, that if Helio ran up a flight of stairs he would pass out. For this reason Helio just watched his brother teach class. One day, Carlos was late and didn’t show up to teach. Helio figured that since he had watched his brother for a long time now that he could show the students a few things while they waited for Carlos. At the end of class, Carlos showed up. Jiu Jitsu is a tremendous physical exercise, but until you really see what it’s like out on the mat you will never understand the mental side of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Here is a fun fact, did you know that the official combat system of the US military and law enforcement is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Rener and Ryron Gracie themselves teach our soldiers and police officers. Rener and Ryron also have a program for kids who are bullied. A young boy named Gordan was bullied by the same person for 6 years. The boy began to train with Rener for the Bullyproof program. Rener told Gordon that if he wanted the bullying to stop he would have to “check” the bully. To check the bully, the students will use assertive verbal sayings. This is to show if the bully will actually attempt to fight or if the bully will see that now the kid is standing up for himself and leave him alone. The bully attempted to start harassing Gordon, which is when he took down the bully and used a knee to belly position to immobilize him.
