Number the stars is a wonderful book about Ellen and Annemarie, 2 ten-year-old girls that are best friends. They go through a lot and their bond only gets stronger when Nazis show up and Annemarie has to protect Ellen because she is a Jew. Even though they go through so many troubles, it only makes them stronger. Number the stars somehow pulled you into itself, for example, when the Nazis boarded the boat, I felt scared. Not just worried but actually scared. I was scared for the safety of all the characters. The book was very realistic and was described so well but still had space for imagination so that I could picture what it would look like in my own way. Number the stars were in past form and in the third person but focused more on Annemarie’s side of the story. Number the stars was a nice 158 page long read. Every page was filled with suspense and action and emotion. I would not say it was an easy read but neither was it challenging. I think this would be a suitable book for grade 5-9s to read. It has lots of suspense and has a large vocabulary, but not too large for younger kids to understand. Lois Lowry has written more than 30 books including The Giver, Gathering Blue, Son and a Summer To Die. The main characters in this story are Annemarie, her family her best friend Ellen and her Family.
