On April 15th 2013, during the running of the 117th Boston Marathon, the city of Boston experienced a tragic event. Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, brothers from the former Soviet Republic are the alleged suspects who perpetrated this tragedy. After a massive search, they were both identified. Tamerlan was killed while being shot by the police and Dzhokhar was captured and is awaiting trial. They allegedly used homemade explosives containing BB like pellets and nails packed into a pressure cooker, stuffed them into their backpacks and planted their backpacks next to the known route of the Boston Marathon. It is on Patriots’ Day, which is the designated day that celebrates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. American History states that this battle was the first battle between the American Patriots and the British during the American Revolutionary War. It is celebrated every year on the third Monday of April. The year of the bombing that third Monday of April fell on April 15th, 2013. There were 26,655 registered participants running in the Boston Marathon that day and many more thousands of spectators watching the race. The runners started in the west of Boston in the town of Hoboken. During the marathon, many family, friends, and other spectators gather to cheer and watch the race. No one was expecting anything other the usual running of the race by the participants. Near the finish line on Boylston Street the first bomb exploded and twelve seconds later the second bomb exploded. Three spectators were instantly killed and more than 260 were injured. It was later determined through police investigation, that the bombs were placed in backpacks near the runners route and exploded twelve seconds apart.
