In the case study of the California State University, Dominguez Hills, the bilingual curriculum blends the acquisition of English, the use of heritage language and promotes a positive self-image. Under the curriculum in Dominguez Hills, students have shown appreciation for this opportunity. Bilingual students from Dominguez Hills said that they recognize the value of the bilingual study that helps them understand the lectures when they can relate to the topics (Olivos 78-79). Another study in Chicago Public Schools, 576 bilingual teachers were hired because of the high population of Latino students in 1993 and the hiring of bilingual teachers double in 1997 (Sakash 42). The outcomes of the bilingual curriculum in Chicago Public Schools were teacher effectiveness and retention along with leadership support and development among the students (47). Under the bilingual curriculum of the Chicago Public Schools, students were encouraged to communicate in Spanish or English while in group discussions (45). Osorio is not the only bilingual teacher who wants to encourage the use of the Spanish and English language or the use of the literature-based reading. Osorio’s technique of implementing topics that her Spanish speaking class can relate to is a key to learning. Her students were able to understand José’s crisis when his mother was deported back to Tijuana because her students were able to discuss about it in class without a problem. I am a bilingual student and I would have liked to have been given the opportunity to learn under a bilingual teacher who connects the students to the topics in class when I required helped learning English. The article gave this idea of giving the students the opportunity to talk about their stories that are similar to the stories they have read in class. This allows the students to not only make a connection, but it also allows the students to be more active in the class discussions and become interested and engaged. When the students were opening up about their personal life crisis, Osorio made sure she did not push the students to a breaking point. She kept watch of their body language and tried not to ask many questions that might have been uncomfortable for the students to answer. Associating the topics in class with the students is a great benefit because then it is a win for the teacher, who makes the topics understandable, and a win for the student, who is able to connect and
