Atticus The Father Analysis

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is more like God the Father than Bob Ewell. Atticus is one of the best lawyers in Maycomb County. The trial the book is centered upon is an interesting one – one, in which, that Atticus happens to be defending the man Bob Ewell accused of raping his daughter. Many in Maycomb, Alabama question Atticus’ parenting abilities. He is a widowed father of two children named Scout and Jem. His methods of teaching his children right from wrong are different than most parents’. While he does allow his children to swear and get into fights (99-fight, 104-swear), he doesn’t necessarily agree with it. Like our Father, he allows his children to make the decision to do these things but helps guide them toward the correct decision. Another way he is like God the Father is that he disciplines his children when punishment is deserved to teach them that there are consequences for your actions (138-140). Having no job and a poor education, he has his family stay home to help gather food and money for the family. This is one of the only attributes Bob Ewell shares with God. He teaches his children the value of hard work by having them pitch in to keep the family healthy. While this is a valuable lesson to teach your children, Bob takes it a bit too far by not having his children go to school at all (36, 245). This is going against the Biblical command to teach your children and bring them up in the ways of God. Another way Mr. Ewell went against the commands of God is that he physically beats his daughter. He also verbally and sexually abuses her (260) and tries to pin the blame for what he did on an innocent man. While Lee never outright says that he raped his daughter, his many young children would say otherwise, especially considering the fact he never remarried after his wife
