People go just because others do and want to avoid criticism for not. Observing in most cases, students pursue a higher education in order to fill a quota that has been pressured upon them since grade school. This results in the situation that, although some are truly intellectually gifted, their worth is still measured by how well they pass classes and whether or not they can obtain the one object that supposedly determines their success- a diploma. The only few who should actually consider college would be “the high-achieving students who are interested in learning for learning’s sake….school teachers, and those young people who seem certain to go on to advanced degrees in law, medicine, architecture” (672). They are the ones who should be focused on receiving a diploma as college can actually train and accustom their knowledge to flourish in their fields.…

Attending UACCB has benefitted me because it has allowed me to obtain my associates degree in one to two semesters of being out of high school. Being allowed to take these classes while in high school has given me the option to start my career earlier than most kids my age. I have taken 15 college classes, and while I have struggled at times to keep up with having high school and college classes, I have gained so much respect for myself because I have been able to see what I can handle. I have conditioned myself to taking three high school classes with sixteen to seventeen college hours. My college classes have boosted my GPA.…

Why Forensic Pathology? Many have disputed the importance of going to college, many say that college is a waste of time, many say that college is the only option for their families. High school students see college as the only way to be successful in their lives, while on the other hand people believe that there are too many students in college. They believe that most students that do not score above the 90th percentile are “too dumb” to go to college, that it is too stressful of an environment for many people and that is why only a percentage of students out of high school should attend.…

Thou Shalt Attend In high school it was quite apparent that students could receive many absences with little or no consequences and still be able to maintain a good grade point average. However, in college that is not the case. Student attendance in college is important because students who attend class have better grades, have better relationships with their peers as well as professors and develop responsible habits and behaviors. Although Bourdieu does not consider himself a Marxist’s sociologist, the theories of Karl Marx heavily influenced Bourdieu’s thinking. Marx’s influence is most evident in Bourdieu’s theory of culture capital (kavisto, pg.483). Bourdieu argued that capital forms the foundation of social life and dictates one’s position within the social order. Bourdieu also stated, the more capital someone has, the more power and opportunity he/she will possess in society. Moreover, Bourdieu’s idea of capital went beyond the economic and more into a symbolic realm of social culture, the “habitus and field” of individuals in society.…

There are a couple of places where the comma usage in this essay is not standard. Commas are a difficult form of punctuation for many people, and getting used to using them comes from writing frequently. Ever since I could remember going to college was something that my parents always talked to us about. My parents wanted my siblings and I to have more opportunities than they did. Coming to the United States in 1979, my parents never realized that going to college was an option for them. The language barrier for them was hard to overcome and their main priority was to maintain themselves financially. They acquired jobs in factories, as night porters, as maintenance workers and anything else they could find in order to survive.…

I have always been more of an observer than a participant. I think that it is the reason I am quite perceptive with people—I do my best to see them, beyond the masks that they put on for the world. It was this perception that motivated me from a young age. I grew up quiet, watching as my mother worried and cried for my sisters, who went down darker paths, dropping out of college and spending an increasing amount of time with bad influences. I understood, even then, that I didn’t ever want to cause that kind of stress to my mother.…
