People play for a variety of reasons in individual or team sports. The driving force that keeps them playing generally establishes the level of achievement. An athlete’s degree of determination is in four groups: the professional, the forced to play, the naturally talented, and the lover of the game.
The first group of athletes is the professional who have spent a lifetime honing the skill in the sport and paid to play the game. These types of individuals have chosen the sport for making a living. Entertainment is part of the job for this athlete. The public views those in this group as heroes. This athlete must possess a mental toughness and stay in top physical shape to compete. During the off-season, the athlete must continue to train in the sport. Working out continually is necessary for the person to participate as a professional. A team of coaches specializing in the sport must work to keep the athlete at the top of the game. Even if the game brings no pay, glory, or recognition, individuals in this group continue to play for the pure love of the sport. Participation in a formal team or sport is not required at this level of play. A quick game of basketball with friends is enough. Lovers of the game play more often which help keep them fit. Passionate athletes will take an opportunity to improve the skill level. Passion for the sport also gives the person a sense of community when joining in with others who are like-minded. In summation, the professional athlete, the forced to play, the naturally talented, and the lover of the game can benefit from participating in sports. Being physically fit and mentally awake is a requirement for each type of athlete. All athletic groups also require commitment, discipline, and the ability to determine each goal.
