Mr. X a 52year old person with complaints of joints pains and joints instability, he has a history of frequent falls and injuries, and he has been advised for a strength training programme. Enumerate the various assessment methods used to measure the muscle tone and muscle strength of Mr X
Topic: assessment of muscle tone and muscle strength of Mr X.
The important component of fitness is muscle tone and muscle strength. It is the ability of an individual to use muscles to exert force on physical objects.
According to Stolov, 1966, muscles tone is "the resistance of the muscle to passive elongated or stretching”. It is a measure of muscles resistance to stretching while in a passive resting state. There is normal muscle tone when there is the right amount of tension inside the muscles at rest, and that the muscle is inherently able to contract on command. Muscle tone helps to maintain posture as well as balance, and it is an indicator of the body's reflex to maintain partial muscle contraction during rest. Muscle strength is the amount of force a muscle can exert in a single contraction. It is a component of physical fitness which can be developed, as well as an individual's ability to perform a certain task. Muscles strength helps in injury prevention, protects joint from excessive wear and tear, offer relief from joint pain and degeneration, and it is important for healthy joints and many physical activities of daily life. The various assessment methods used to measure the muscle tone of Mr.x are as follows: 1.Inspection: the attitude of the limb of mr X at rest is examined, after explaining the procedure to him in order to gain his co-operation and also make him to relax. …show more content…
2.Palpation: his muscles will be felt for normally, firmness and flabbiness.
3.Range of joints movement
Specific maneuvers:
1.The babinski tone test: The arms of Mr X are abducted at the shoulders, while the fore-arms are passively flexed at the elbow. With hypotonity, there will be increased flexibility and mobility, and his elbows will be bent to an angle more acute than normal, while there will be reduced flexibility and passive flexion will not be carried out beyond an obtuse angle.
2.The head-dropping test: this will be done to determine the extra pyramidal rigidity of Mr X.
3.Pendulousness of the legs: wartenberg's pendulum test to determine the muscle tone of the legs of Mr. X.
4.The shoulder-shocking test: this is used to assess the range of swing of Mr. X.
5.The arm-dropping test: this is another method that will be used to assess the muscle tone of the arms of Mr X.
6.The ash worth scale: the modified ash worth scale will be used to measure Mr.x resistance during passive soft tissue stretching. The various assessment methods used to be measure the muscle strength of Mr X are as follows: 1.Isometric method: this test will be used to assess Mr X's muscle contraction without a change in the length of muscles, which is known as hand grip dynamometer. 2.Isotonic: this test will be carried out on Mr X to determine his muscle contraction with a change in the length of the muscle, called bench press. 3.Isokinetically: this will be used to assess if mr. x maximal tension is developed at all his joint angles throughout the ranged of motion with speed being constant. 7.2: Assessment of lower extremities.
