We need to protect our liberties from foreign powers as well as our own government. If we lose our gun rights, we could end up losing all of our rights. We have already seen this happen. The Ugandan government banned civilians from having guns in 1969 . Shortly after this happened, their human rights were being violated. It is hard to organize for political change without the police disallowing these meetings. Peaceful political activists are having a hard time changing the government. Politicians who do not favor the government can be arrested for inciting violence, regardless of evidence. Politicians had faced arrest, detention, and other criminal charges. A group of seven politicians were also arrested for belonging to an “Unlawful Society” for wanting change. Uganda’s corruption poses a serious problem. Lasting from 1971-1979, Army Chief of Staff Idi Amin staged a military coup, which took roughly 300,000 civilian lives. The death rate per 100,000 people was 1.1 in 2008 and 0.9 in 2009. This is less than the number of lives lost during the military coup, which could’ve been deterred. This goal of this coup was to overthrow their corrupt government. Our laws here don’t apply to criminals as effectively as they do law-abiding citizens. A criminal, or anyone in a dangerous area, would not want to give up their guns. It is illegal to carry guns in the city of Chicago, however many people, mostly criminal minded, still own guns. Most people in this country who own guns are people who would only use them for self-defense. Americans stand too strong on their view of guns for gun control to be effective. It wouldn’t even make it harder for a criminal to obtain a gun. People in Chicago brag about how easy it is to get one. The last thing a shooter would worry about is if having a gun is legal. The Center for Disease Control has admitted that gun control does not reduce crime. Concealed carry has been shown to actually reduce crime, including rape and murder. For every time a gun is used to take a life, it is used around 50 times to save a life. In Washington D.C., guns have been banned entirely. The murder rate there is 46 people per 100,000. In Arlington, Virginia, guns have not been banned. The murder rate is 6.1 per 100,000 people. America is not like the other
