Improved Essays
Junk food is quickly becoming America's cigarette, causing more death related illnesses than a pack of smokes. Before you judge your friends for lighting one up, take a look at the food you’re ingesting and what it is doing to your body. For the past few years, kids have been consuming a great deal of unhealthy food into their bodies. If having junk food was not enough, they’re wanting to have the option to purchase these fattening foods at school. The debate has been unleashed, Should schools limit junk food sales? I personally think schools should limit high cholesterol and sugary foods for the kids’ health and future health of our nation. Schools should limit junk food sales because junk food can later on cause diseases and illness. For example, junk food has been said to cause immediate and long-term health problems for kids 5-17 years old. It is obvious, the more unhealthy food you put into your body, the more likely you’re going to gain weight. As a result, obese adolescents have a higher chance of getting, “pre-diabetes, cardiovascular disease factors, and bone/joint problems.” Not only does …show more content…
For example, last year the Long Beach Unified School District decided to test out the new plan of a healthy lunch. The school surprisingly received a, “73 percent approval rating”, from their students on the new menu. It was also stated that many students were very supportive of the idea of a clean and fat free lunch (F). This shows that students are okay with change, it is time for somebody to start off the movement. Kids at first, might not be very opened with the idea, however, through time and patient they will understand that the school is doing this for them. In addition, limiting the resource of junk food will expose the kids to the new types of food they have not experienced before, possibly leading them to have a brighter and lively

According to Barboza, in 2002 food companies were spending $15 billion and 20 percent of the nation’s schools serve fast food. As of the time this was written and even today legislation has been in the process to fix some of these issues by taking small steps including banning school vending machines. Personally, I have yet to see a school with a vending machine in person, this confirms for me that the school vending machines have been banned for a while now. Kids are more vulnerable to be in contact with fast food if it is sold in a place such as their own school or any place kids would typically be such as parks or shopping malls. It is harder and almost impossible to affect kid’s eating habits when they are in an area surrounded by fast food, but that is why it does matter that a place like a school is affected by these…

The first point is why there is unhealthy food in school lunches. a) The main reason for this is because unhealthy foods are a huge source of revenue to schools. b) The amount of money a school makes from federal reimbursements and fundraising isn’t enough to suffice their financial costs. Therefore they must rely on competitive foods, which are foods that are sold outside of school lunches.…

Many different associations along with the First Lady plan on doing this by showing children what it means to be healthy. Children have been getting more and more diseases that are more common in adults than in children. This country can not afford to have the medical bills of so many obese children getting diabetes and high blood pressure, but this country can afford to make their lives healthier and more active.(White House Press Release) Along with all of the positives of the Healthy Kids Initiative there has been a big obstacle and that is that children are getting exposed to fruits and vegetables that they are not given in the home or have any experience with in general. This causes children to be less eager to try the new foods along with they might not like the healthier options if they are used to sugary fat filled foods.…

Food is going to waste due to this and so is money. The New York Times mentioned how the meals comes off as tasteless and bland to the children and also pointed out that these regulations prevent the cafeterias from providing the children with foods that are staples of diets for children in countries with much lower rates of childhood and adult obesity than the United States (Murphy,2015). What schools should be focusing on is making the healthy food options full of flavor as well. Studies have shown that school age children need at least five portions of different…

Continuing, junk food intake is definitely something that needs to be taken aware of due to the unhealthy effects; it could lead to obesity and even worse, diseases coinciding with obesity, such as Type 2 diabetes or heart disease. I support Bloomberg and Lieberman when they say that government should help regulate our intake of unhealthy foods. Of course you cannot force someone to do something, like eating healthy foods every day, but at least this will bring more awareness to the fact that an immense intake of junk food is very detrimental to one’s health. Like Donald Trump says, “Let’s make America great again”- in this case,…

This being said I don’t think that any food that is deemed unhealthy should completely be obliterated from the fast food industry, but I do think that children need to learn from their parents or teachers how to consume food and proportion it into healthy servings. Getting to be a child means to dress up on Halloween and eat candy as well as eating cake on their birthday, so entirely getting rid of sweets and anything bad nutrition wise is absurd. If children grow up learning at an early age that we ‘eat to live and not live to eat’ then the obesity rate would be decreased to a lower percentage than it is currently at…

Certain kids have different experiences with their school’s lunches, but it’s safe to assume that the majority of children do not enjoy them one bit. At a school in LA, one child says “The healthier it gets the more disgusting it is” which is just another reason why healthy school lunches are not a good idea. Some children at the school can barely describe what “it” is. Kids want to eat what tastes good, not what tastes like garbage, no matter how good it is for them. It’s not just the taste though; it’s the serving size as well.…

While my brother feels like healthy eating is being shoved down his throat and sometimes resorts to bringing food from home to school. As of last year, one million students stopped buying school lunch and this number of students seems to be increasing. As food costs and labor costs rise, the schools are losing money on the cafeteria programs, and consequently have to dip into the general fund, the fund that supports classrooms. As the standards for school lunches increase, so do the costs and consequently the classroom budget. By dipping into funds for classrooms, schools are forced to put more emphasis on nutrition than in academic resources.…

“The Fast-Food Fight” Some may argue that fast-food has become the new tobacco. Over the years, we have become highly educated on the health related concerns of smoking, as well as the significant health issues associated with overeating. Fast-food consumption has caused great alarm among Americans and is a controversial issue of who is to blame as well as who should take action. Although many critics believe that fast-food consumption is an individual issue and the government should not be involved with one’s personal eating habits, I would argue that some amount of government intervention is needed. While it is understandable that people want to eat what they desire, many people have allowed the convenience and glorification of fast-food in American to take precedence over the unhealthy risks of a fast-food diet.…
