When people think of obesity, the first words that pop into their minds are probably fat, or the new popular term “thick”, but obesity has a deeper meaning than that. If a person lets it, obesity can become a disease. Two major factors that leads to obesity are one’s diet and the exercise. As is common knowledge, obesity has recently become a major problem, especially in America, but, obesity can be stopped.
Obesity is a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems (Google). Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death (cdc). How many people are obese? How prevalent is the obesity epidemic? More than one-third of adults in the US have obesity (cdc). The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who have obesity were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight (cdc). Over 300,000 deaths in the U.S. a year are attributed to obesity. Obesity is second only to smoking as a cause of premature death in the United States (facts). Globally, over 40 million preschool children were overweight in 2007 (facts). One in three U.S. children and teens are overweight or obese (facts). The rate of obesity in America’s children and youth has almost tripled in the last quarter century, and children are the fastest growing segment of the obese population in the U.S. (facts).
