Americans possess the tendency to only address immediate threats to their well being, while delaying the handlement of future issues. This policy ensures today for Americans; however, it jeopardizes the outlook of their tomorrow.
This ideology possessed by American policy makers is best exemplified through the method in which America disposes of their nuclear waste. With people, comes trash, and this inevitability is what is causing New-Yorkers so much headache. Previously, trashcans were placed underground in the subway terminals. Though this seemed like it was the best option for the placement of the trashcans, they would often be overflowing and rat-infested by days’ end. Consequently, to solve this problem, city officials decided to remove thirty of the trashcans, and place the remaining ones at the entrances to the underground terminals (Fitzsimmons). By taking away trashcans, city officials just made it harder for a large amount of trash to be disposed of. The city’s rat problem has not been solved, but instead moved outside of the subway terminals for the entire public to observe. This problem was caused by the laziness of city officials, who decided to work “smart and not hard” to solve this problem. If officials would have solved the problem by creating more frequent trash pickups, then the waste overflow would be eliminated, and the rat’s “feast” would be over. Though individuals who are not citizens of new york cannot have a political impact on the city by voting, they can influence public policy through bringing these types of issues to the public’s attention.
