Physician Shadowing Reflection

The other favorite activity that I have participated in during my high school career is physician shadowing. Through the Health Practicum course offered at Anderson, I have been able to gain invaluable exposure to the medical field and a variety of occupations. Ever since my Honors Anatomy and Physiology course I took sophomore year, my interest in the medical field has grown and developed. Following this course I took Honors Pathophysiology and decided that the next logical course in my health-related progression would be Health Practicum. The shadowing I’ve been able to complete through this course opportunity has helped to solidify my plans for a future in the medical field. While shadowing at a clinic of my choosing allowed me to form relationships …show more content…
Throughout each hospital department, I met numerous caring nurses and dedicated doctors, devoted to helping their patients recover. There are numerous lessons I’ve learned, but one of the first ones I discovered was the significance of patience with your patients. My nurse mentioned to me that patients in hospitals often experience a lack of control over their environment and their medical condition. Because of this, they feel the need to find some source of control. This needed control takes different forms for various patients. For the man I met, this took the form of showering. He was insistent on taking a shower when he wanted to, whether it worked well for his nurse or his scheduled procedures for the day. The man ended up taking a 45 minute shower, refusing to come out, resulting in a delayed procedure, as the nurse waited outside the door for him. While she was frustrated, she was able to remain calm by understanding his actions were motivated not by disrespect for her, but by the human need for control in life. A few rotations later, there was a woman staying in the ICU. She had suffered a severe stroke and had yet to stay awake for more than an hour following it. The entire morning I

The language with which the healthcare workers use in their notes is one that takes an individual to decipher. As an intern at the Emergency Department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, I got to witness many patients coming in with diverse needs and in turn observed the method of notetaking nurses that I had the opportunity to shadow use in recording the complaints of the patients. When I shadowed a nurse in the Emergency Critical Care Unit, she displayed the electronic medical records on the computer screen after visiting a patient's room. I observed her as she added more comments on the progress of the patient. While she was typing I made an effort to decipher what she meant by terms like I&D by recalling all the medical terms and abbreviations…

From early in my childhood, every toy and electronic device in our house was a target for creative ‘re-construction’, holding each piece up with a probing ‘why’. As I grew older, ‘why’ became a need to fix, build and reconceptualize and so the path toward medicine was a natural progression. Years later, my facscination in podiatry emerged through formal and informal study; recognizing a medical universality about the specific region of the foot and ankle. In incorporating a range of specialties to include Dermatology, Orthopedics, and Pain Management, few areas of medicine seemed so encompassing. A personal turning point was the realization that mobility is what defined the very notion of functional independence.…

Shadowing a physician provided me with direct exposure to medicine, allowing me to engage with patients and interact with physicians. I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Furthermore, this experience helped me explore the daily lives of physicians and the challenges they face.…

Volunteering at a dental clinic during my free time really exposed me to the field I wanted to go into. My experience with patients while shadowing Dr. Hasany at her dental office gave me a more intimate one-on-one perspective. My interest was beyond piqued as I watched the doctor perform root canals, extract teeth, fill cavities, treat gum disease, remove decay as well as listening to patient’s concerns. While shadowing the dentist, I understood the value of communication.…

I learnt so much in the time spent shadowing Dr. Sharma this semester. I learned not only medical terminology but also on how to operate a successful practice. Dr. Sharma has a great relationship with all his employees and treats them all with respect. He also has a good relationship with his patients that he sees on a regular basis; they all seemed to enjoy his presence and telling him about what was going on in their life. Most patients even seemed to trust Dr. Sharma more than their primary doctor.…

Weekly Self S.O.A.P - A. S- Discuss your SUBJECTIVE feelings for this week. This week I was assigned to be in the ICU. To say that I expected to be busy is an understatement. I knew to expect critically ill patients and to see them at their worse with different types of lines and tubes coming out of their bodies. The fragile state in which these patients find themselves was hard for me to see, it was actually a bit overwhelming the first day.…

I participated in this program last year and it was one of the most insightful experiences in the medical field I been able to have. Volunteering is great however, shadowing is much more, ironically, engaging. It provokes me to think critically when observing situation as if I was taking care of the patient myself. Then, I can match it up with what the physician whom I am shadowing does and thinks.…

This year I sustained a serious shoulder injury. I was amazed at the skill of the medical staff and their genuine concern for my wellbeing. I considered becoming a medic before but this experience convinced me such a career must be the correct one. I have a genuine interest and aptitude for human biology; the composition and mechanics of the human body have always fascinated me, in particular its ability to heal and adapt to various traumas, to apply this understanding to alleviate human suffering is what drives me to such an intellectually demanding vocation.…

I set three specific goals for my first week back in clinical practice. I want to work on a few areas that I found challenging from last semester. My first goal was completing my head to toe assessment in a linear fashion, taking a break in the morning and completing my documentation in a timely manner allowing myself to have more time to learn about my clients’ condition, health history (by going through her chart and care plan), be on time with my charting and arrive on time for our clinical debrief. My client was complex with CHF, hypokalemia, weakness, MRSA and was on contact precautions and had 11 medications to be given by 8am.…

The reason is because in the situation of providing a bed bath, it involves private areas that people are used to taking care of themselves. No one wants to depend on another person unless they have to, and acting disrespectfully impacts their dignity. There is no excuse for the nurse 's rude reactions to the patient during the bed bath. Even though she technically acted properly in terms of completing her duty to provide a bed bath, she should have been more considerate of how the patient was feeling vulnerable and experiencing distress. Additionally, I value having empathy for others and having the patience to take the time to discuss what is bothering the patient.…

I work in the operating room in the labor and delivery suite. I have worked there for the past two years and have gained L&D experience, but I am primarily a circulating nurse in the operating room. Lately there has been a push to promote skin-to-skin care with mother and the newborn infant post Cesarean Section in the operating room. This skin-to-skin contact, also referred to as Kangaroo Care, can contribute to newborn thermoregulation and blood glucose stabilization, increased milk production, ease with breastfeeding, more confidence and stronger attachment, as well as distraction from discomfort. I understand promoting this after a vaginal delivery, but am curious about the experience occurring after a C-section in the operating room and…

My Heart and My Mind. When talking to my peers about why they chose to pursue a degree in medicine, I often hear a story of inspiration brought about by a drastic health encounter, or perhaps a story about a doctor who they desire to emulate. My story is different, as it does not particularly pertain to an “ah-ha” experience. There have been a multitude of experiences in my life that have guided not only my mind towards a career in medicine, but my heart as well. A few of these experiences are detailed below.…
