According to Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute, “all applications must have a clear plan for pursuing external funding based on the pilot project that is being submitted to the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (ACS IRG). The format for these proposals include the body of the proposal to not exceed 6 pages, using the document template, and follow standard NIH format with the below recommendations. Appendices may not be more than 4 pages. Proposals must follow formatting guidelines of fonts of Helvetica or Arial, font size 11 point or larger and 1/2 inch margins. Sections to cover in the body of the proposal (6 pages total)”. (“Harper Cancer Research Institute,” 2015)
If these guidelines are not followed and if the page numbers exceed the page number limit or “fail to follow the formatting guidelines, the proposal will be returned to the investigator without review” (“Harper Cancer Research Institute,” 2015). In addition, if the proposal is a resubmission, one page is provided to address reviewers’ critiques” (“Harper Cancer Research Institute,” 2015). Usually ACS have their grants submitted electronically. They streamline the grant administration process with an electronic post award management system, identified as Altum Proposal Central” (“Apply For a Research Grant,” 2015). ACS also has a site that is used to upload all requests for grant changes and related documents, and required reports (deliverables). The site will house all reports, requests and correspondence pertaining to a grant and is accessible to both ACS program staff and grantees” (“Apply For a Research Grant,” 2015). There is a large amount of funding that ACS gives to many researchers each year. “As the nation's largest private, not-for-profit source of funds for scientists studying cancer, the American Cancer Society (ACS) focuses its funding on investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed proposals”(“Grant Types,” 2015). ACS gets “support from the public as of December 31, 2014, was $840 million, down $45 million compared to the prior year and non-public support, which primarily includes investment income, change in value of split-interest agreements, and grants and contracts from government agencies was $46 million in 2014, a $40 million decrease over 2013. (“2015 Annual Stewardship Report,” 2015). ACS gives different types of awards to researchers with “unique hypotheses for cancer prevention and study, fostering the next generation of cancer research and creating a strong foundation of preliminary evidence to make scientific advancements” (“Apply For Research Grant,” 2015). One of the individuals that play a major role in this process is William H. Chambers, PhD, Senior Vice President, and Extramural Grants. He is the head of the Extramural Grants department. Chambers along with others who “make decisions about who gets certain types of grants” (“American Cancer Society Researchers,” 2015).
ACS also has an epidemiology research Program for intramural research.
