Valentino awakens from the sleep of ignorance. He eliminates ignorance understanding other people through wisdom. Valentino develops the wisdom with compassion towards his friend Achor Achor. While Valentino is still on the floor of his apartment Powder have his backpack, which contains his homework from Georgia Perimeter College and “imagining the time it will take to reproduce those notebooks, now so close to midterm exams, almost bring me [Valentino] to my feet” (Eggers 11) But, in fact, Valentino keeps lying on the floor. The fact that someone is rummaging through his belongings does not make him to get up. (Eggers 8) This situation makes Valentino raises himself to his knees. Valentino realizes that suffering can be overcome if people will spend more time and energy to help others. For sure, Valentino was being kicked after that. But there is no doubt that he fought not for the Achor Achor’s belongings, but for his happiness. Valentino fells sympathy and caring towards Achor Achor. He knows that Tonya and Powder take pieces of Achor Achor’s life (as he is the leader of young refugees – his records are the part of his life) for their own gratification and he will not excuse himself if he does not try to stop robbers. Valentino feels great compassion for the possible disaster of other person. He knows if he wants really understand himself, he should understand others. Through the force of compassion, Valentino does not think why he should help Achor Achor – he naturally acts in the most beneficial way. According to Buddhism, that is an important step towards eliminating ignorance. Furthermore, Valentino learns to respond to the difficult situations with a positive state of
