The Kite Runner Selfish Quotes

Everybody has things that they are guilty of, some things bigger than others. Amir, the protagonist of The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, suffers from the guilt of all he has done too. The first argument is that Amir is a selfish person. The next argument is Amir feels he has to compete with Hassan for Baba’s love. The last argument is that Amir always wants to feel smarter than Hassan. As Amir seeks redemption for his cruelty to Hassan, saving Sohrab is not enough to atone for all his past mistakes.

To begin, Amir is a selfish person, especially when it comes to Hassan. The first example of Amir’s selfishness is after cutting the last kite.

This quote takes place after Hassan gets raped by Assef, when Hassan initially avoids Amir but then tries to patch things over, only Amir doesn’t want to, he starts pushing away Hassan. This shows Amir’s selfishness because Hassan is hurt and horrified by what happened to him, and wants to have Amir play with him to help him forget. Amir, not wanting to face the fact he could have done something, ignores Hassan’s desperate pleas. The third example of Amir’s selfishness is when Amir hides the watch and money he got for his birthday under Hassan’s
