Students Under Pressure an article written by Amy Novotney, published on September 2014. In her article, Novotney is reporting on college’s and university’s counseling centers search for the best way to serve their students that are seeking services. As the years continue to pass college is becoming more affordable for students, allowing a larger amount of students to become a part of the student body, which will create a greater demand for counseling services. With many colleges receiving insufficient funds for mental health services means they will be lacking access to care and treatment. This has led the universities and colleges to search for new ways to treat the students, I believe this could lead to a great advance in not only college

When I first started university, I had to go to an advising session; while, I do not remember what it was about, The one thing that managed to grab my attention was when the advisor said “I can spot a freshman a mile away” when someone asked her how, she replied” just search for people who look lost and confused”. It struck a chord deep within me because I was really lost and confused, not only that but also anxious, friendless, and afraid of all the responsibilities and of the possibility of failing. While my family assured me that these obstacles are the key element in becoming more responsible, and overcoming them will allow me to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I, on the other hand, felt like these obstacles were not character builders, but more like energy and time consumers that affected the academic performances and health of both my peers’ and myself. I strongly believe that fixing these problems should be one of the university’s priorities.…

The article "Why treat university students like fragile flowers?" was written by Margaret Wente and published in The Globe and Mail on September 19, 2017. In this article, Wente differentiates the difference between the treatment of institutions in the present than the past few years. Colleges and Universities considered mental health issues as part of a student's disability. It is because there is a significant increase in the anguish of students. Through this notion, students who are experiencing social and cognitive issues, such as anxiety and depression, are given an opportunity to extend deadlines at own pace.…

“What I wish for all students is some release from the clammy grip of the future. I wish them a chance to savor each segment of their education as an experience in itself and not as a grim preparation for the next step.” This quote blatantly shows how the author of this article wants to help college students. This information must be told because someone with experience needs to keep college students from cracking under the pressure. “I see four kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure.…

Many people use drugs just for the effects, others however, will take a drug to try and increase performance, apart of a cultural ritual, or because of those around them using. Many college students will start taking Adderall or Ritalin to try and increase performance or to stay awake long enough to finish all of their work. Many Native American tribes used drugs like alcohol and tobacco as apart of rituals. You then have people who are apart of a great ecosystem of drug user, dealer, and seller who may get wrapped into drugs because they are apart of that group. College is a time where people have the most amount of pressure for academic and social success.…

College master and professor, William Zinsser, in his essay, “College Pressures” (1979) expresses that college students endure tremendous levels of pressure to secure a future, yet the effects of this pressure have a negative impact on the students outlook on life, spawning from financial, parental, peer, and one’s own goals to succeed. He supports his claim by first identifying the causes of these pressures, and the justifications students use to place the blame else way; then he illustrates the unreasonable deification of those who find success in American society, and how it creates a nearly impossible standard to reach with and unrealistic concept of failure. As well, he provides examples of the consequences these pressures on the academic…

Since most universities provide reasonable accommodations for students with physical and learning needs—why not emotional? The concept of trigger warnings and safe spaces is a brilliant idea, that provides students with trauma, the opportunity to prepare for potentially graphic content in the classroom. Equally important, encouraging students to express when they are feeling stressed.…
