Martha Ballard left behind a diary of her life story, but what was unusual was that Ulrich finds that there is not much evidence from women (AMT). Men were the ones that had evidence because they left behind documents, such the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence. Documents were the leading factors of what went on and how the colonies were shaped. Like Martha’s diary, the documents that we read today they give us explanations. Explanations on the power, the social status of men and women, the laws, voting and religious views. But what is different about each one is that they have their own way of writing to fit the language and behaviors of each person. We wouldn’t be able to understand what a colonist is trying to say if we didn’t have documents from the …show more content…
“An unusual kind of archeological detective work yields new insights into the spread of culture through colonial New England. It also tests the science of archaeology for accuracy” (Deetz, p. x). Deetz’s method is finding evidence and testing it to see if it’s accurate, but how are you suppose to know if it’s accurate without documents to help back it up? Even though it maps the spread of colonization, there is more to the colony then just the transformations. It is about the way it is built and set up to accommodate the unified environment of economic, social and political knowledge. Meaning, the cultural spread is due to the spread of realization and the different techniques that go into forming history. Using the same way to figure out everything about history is nothing less, but accurate. Not one single piece of history is exactly the same. Deetz used his opinion (independent thought), through gravestones to figure out a conclusion, but independent thought is not always true. There is definitely a slight understanding of what went on, but not a true, exact answer. An answer is needed to show historical evidence and how it is compared today. Gravestones do show a definite design and technique used in that time period, like Georgian design and how houses were built. Using information like architectural techniques is a piece of information that shows a concept
