The American Revolution and the years following it led to changes in American society politically, economically, socially and geographically.
After the American Revolution, the government of America was created and changed. The first form of government in America was the Articles of Confederation. The Articles established the basic functions of national government in America after its newfound independence from Britain. The Articles were not strong enough to prevent conflict in the states, Shays’ Rebellion, so states wanted more power (Doc G). Americans called for change in the Articles, so delegates from all the states met at the Constitutional Convention and instead of just making minor changes to the Articles, wrote the Constitution. The government was stronger after the Constitution, but Americans still argued about whether they liked it or not, Federalist versus Anti-Federalists (Doc I). During the war, Loyalists were not respected by Patriots at all because they were going against America. When the Patriots won the war Loyalists had their land taken by the American government, were exiled, went to England by choice, or reestablished themselves in America as a devoted citizen (Doc B). Women after the war were seen as more important in the household because of their support and help during the war (Doc A). Republican motherhood gave women more responsibility, were in charge of raising the next generation and the survival of the new nation. Though women had gained these things, they still had no way of being heard (Doc J). Slaves in the northern states were freed while those in the south were kept to work the land. Blacks were considered three-fifths of a person in voting standards because of the ⅗ Compromise created at the Constitutional Convention. So things still were not equal for everyone after the
