Seven female undergraduates founded Alpha Chi on October 15, 1885 at DePauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana. The sorority was established to form a women’s society within the school (“Our History”). Membership was originally limited only to female students in DePauw’s School of Music, but the membership requirement soon changed to include female liberal arts students as long as they were enrolled in a music course. While the enrollment in a music course is no longer a requirement for membership, members of Alpha Chi continues to appreciate its link to the fine arts. The choice to join Alpha Chi is predicated in the shared value and standard for membership in the Fraternity. Invitation for membership is extended based on five membership standards: academic interest, character, financial responsibility, leadership ability and personal development (The Dedication, 2013).
