For as long as history recalls itself racism has been an ongoing issue that is left polluting and ruining society. It has had such a tremendous impact on how people live, how they interact with others, and their own success. Although society provides its people with different opportunities to make a better life. Individuals fail to realize how corrupt the system really is. Social workers are professionals that are trained to help individuals cope with a wide range of social problems. The AFDC is known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children and the sole purpose of this program created in 1935 that only lasted 61 years until 1996 was aimed at providing financial aid to families with children who had little to no source of income that was coming into the household. This program did not help Blacks one can say it only created more problems for them. Due to the environment and how many people treated Blacks as well as other minorities Blacks specifically had a difficult time presuming a job. Instead of having a job that documents everything, Blacks were working off the books which meant that they were compensated with cash being handed to them. For one this is a bad idea because it was likely that the payments made were not an accurate and people were not getting the cash they worked for. If blacks were being discriminated and had all these problems just because of the color of their skin it is likely that they were taken advantage of. For individuals to be allowed into social insurance programs there was criteria that had to be met. One of the requirements was that people had to show a proof of a source of income which withheld taxes. This completely shut down Blacks from being eligible. It was and still is likely for a white person rather than a person of color to get hired for a job. This program was also connected to mother’s pension programs. In fact, this program also discriminated. White widows; ladies who have lost a husband and have remained single were the ones to prosper and take in all the benefits. This program acted out on “separate but equal” which really meant inequality truth be told. For instance, Blacks were given service one way while Whites were given service another

In “How a Democrat Killed Welfare” by Premilla Nadasen we read about Bill Clinton, former Democratic President of the U.S. and how while in office, he essentially destroyed welfare in the U.S. Firstly, I just wanted to say that I was very surprised that this article was in the course packet, considering that this is a sociology class; and I’d assume most if not all sociologists are Democrats. I found it surprising to see an article slamming Democrats. After Clinton was elected in 1992, many people breathed a sigh of relief as they thought the the horrors of the Reagen-Bush era were over.…

Professionals, such as Social Workers, are seen as occupying positions of power and influence, it is important to add this is not always intentional. Anti-discriminatory practice seeks to diminish discrimination from all practice. This model suggests oppression happens in three forms- personal, structural and cultural. Working with seniors in the case of abuse is challenging and demanding, and social workers need to use an anti-oppressive approach in order to address the issue and meet seniors’ needs. Additionally, social workers need to have a deep knowledge about risk factors, symptoms of neglect and elder abuse, in order to address the consequences and prevent them from reoccurrence (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). Elder abuse is a result of oppression based on age, which means that structural anti-oppression intervention surrounding aging is required in order to “confront and change social institutions, policies, laws, and economic and political systems that operate in a way that benefit the dominant group at the expense of subordinate groups” (Mullaly, 2007,…

Critical Analysis Paper #1 Question #1: Social Work and Systems Theory Social Work as a concept and a career is simple, yet difficult to define. Social work has grown and developed from the seed that is envelops social issues in our society. As Robbins, Chatterjee, and Canda state in Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (2012), defined situations within society have dictated the need for social work and advocates to speak on behalf of those who are unable to speak for themselves. From the inception of its career, social work has been associated with helping those in need, whether that be at a micro-level with individual therapy and case management, or a macro level with policy development and large scale advocacy efforts.…

Yee argues that social workers should understand that the concept of whiteness is what holds in place the current racist structures within society today. if social workers fail to grasp this concept, that will increase the dominant groups’ position within society by the “denial of racism” (J, Yee, Page-88 Line-10) Yee, also states that whiteness perpetuates and maintains the dominant power within social organizations today, because of this it makes it difficult for antiracism workers from helping in the fight against racism, because the doment group doesn’t want to lose the power they currently hold, This is important because it’s this that prevents the world we live in today from changing into a better one, and stops anti racism social workers/practitioners from completing their world changing duties and goals. Therefor more racism, and other forms of oppression are less likely to remain unchallenged in the workplace, and beyond. To paraphrase, June Yee, also stated that if people, including social workers focused on the cultural aspect of an individual or group, then that would distract social work practitioners from combatting unconscious/conscious bias or racism (J, Yee Page-90-line-18) On the top of page 91 Yee, also states that the anti-oppressive practice and anti-racism approach have been “co-opted” into mainstream practice, that continues to uphold the more dominant group’s position within our society. On the same page, Yee, also states that versions of anti oppressive practice does not discuss the ways minority or marginalized people could be empowered by bringing down structures of oppression such as “colonialism, patriarchy, heterosexism and ableism” Yee, also stated that “one” cannot speak about whiteness until they fully grasp that whiteness is a social construction.…

We also understand its pivotal role in the service it delivers to those in need by a way of the social policy arena devising and advocating to address the wide range of social problems in order to bring about change (Jacobson, 2001). Ironically, social policy efforts that are recent is aimed at the establishment or the protection of social workers roles, verses promoting transformations in the delivery of human services (Jacobson, 2001).
